Jamie Vardy to Miss England vs. Australia International Friendly Due to Wedding

Christopher SimpsonMay 23, 2016

Jamie Vardy will be absent for England's upcoming friendly with Australia on Friday, as he is getting married two days prior.

Per BBC Sport, the Leicester City striker revealed he has manager Roy Hodgson's permission to take time off for his wedding, saying: "The boss has given me Wednesday off but I'll be back training after that."

According to the Daily Mail's Laurie Whitwell, Vardy—whose wedding to Becky Nicholson was postponed from last year—was due to be married in June at the start of the European Championships, but moved it to May in order to turn out for the Three Lions at the tournament,

Per BBC Sport, Hodgson said the 29-year-old "deserves" the break from training to get married, and added: "I don't think his place in the team or the squad at the moment is under enormous threat and we do have other players that we need to look at."

Indeed, due to their involvements in Wednesday's UEFA Europa League final and Saturday's FA Cup final, Daniel Sturridge, Wayne Rooney and Marcus Rashford were all unavailable for Sunday's 2-1 win over Turkey, in which Vardy scored a late winner, per England:

Amid their return to the squad, it's likely they would have been given a run out regardless of Vardy's absence.

The striker was moved to his natural central position alongside Harry Kane in the later stages of the Turkey match, from which he won a penalty for the Three Lions before eventually finding the net.

Former England striker Gary Lineker hailed his impact:

However, he spent much of the first hour deployed out wide—a position it seems he will continue to be utilised in, per ITV Football:

The Times' Oliver Kay believes Vardy is less effective on the left than through the middle, as does Bleacher Report UK:

Indeed, while playing as a centre-forward, the Foxes man bagged 24 Premier League goals this season. Last year, in which he spent Leicester's campaign out wide, he netted just five.

Of course, his pace and work rate makes him a more viable wide option than Kane, but the pair have chemistry, and it's clear he's much more of a threat centrally.

The same can be said for Sturridge, Rooney and Rashford. None are particularly suited to playing out wide, so Hodgson will either have to change his system—which he should also consider doing when he fields Vardy—or force one of them to take the vacant slot on the left.

England have just two more matches until the tournament starts, and it's vital Hodgson has the system and style in place to get the best out of his squad by then. If not, it could be yet another summer of "what ifs" for the Three Lions.
