Preakness 2016: What Video Replay Shows for Exaggerator's Belmont Odds

Danny WebsterMay 22, 2016

If at first you don't succeed, try again. That's what Exaggerator did on Saturday, and it worked.

Nyquist's bid for the Triple Crown ended after Exaggerator won the 141st Preakness Stakes in the sloppy conditions at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.

Exaggerator fell victim to a late charge from Nyquist at Churchill Downs. The horse that came into Saturday undefeated in eight career races tasted defeat for the first time after Exaggerator made a charge down the home stretch.

There won't be any Triple Crown extravaganza this year. All that's left to settle is who wins the rubber match between Exaggerator and Nyquist at the Belmont Stakes.

Let's go to the video tape, via NBC Sports:

Due to the muddy conditions on the track, this was going to be a race won by precision and patience. And as the horses were about to enter the first turn, notice that Exaggerator was nowhere near the pack. He was actually third-to-last at that point.

Exaggerator, per the NBC broadcast, was 13 lengths behind Nyquist.

At the ¾-mile mark, Exaggerator started to make his move along the rail. He jumped from near the bottom of the pack to only four spots off the lead. Coming around the final turn, Exaggerator was in third place and caught in between Uncle Lino and Nyquist. That's when Exaggerator made the move of the race. He found an opening, moving left to right, and stormed past Nyquist for the win.

"To me, it looked like Nyquist was trying to establish an outward position, maybe in the four path," Exaggerator's jockey, Kent Desormeaux, said, per ESPN.com. "He was jockeying for position all the way down the back side. And Exaggerator just kind of slid up the fence to the far turn, where I actually got to slow him down and say, 'Whenever I'm ready.'"

Here's where Nyquist went wrong: Exaggerator took the same approach Nyquist did at the Kentucky Derby. Nyquist was near the front of the pack for the majority of the race before storming down the home stretch to win. Desormeaux maintained a steady pace, even when his colt was near the very back.

"They had him surrounded," Desormeaux said, per Joe Drape of the New York Times.

Given the conditions, Exaggerator ran a near-perfect race. The allure of Nyquist racing at Belmont is gone, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see Nyquist not run in two weeks. But Exaggerator seems like a viable horse to run and should be the overwhelming favorite at the Belmont Stakes.
