Exaggerator Finally Breaks Through
Exaggerator was the No. 2 pick for the second straight race. He had also never beaten Nyquist, but he got over the hump Saturday.
According to CBS Pittsburgh's Kevin Martin, Nyquist defeated Exaggerator four previous times. Exaggerator nearly ran down Nyquist to close out the Kentucky Derby, but he came up short.
ESPN Stats & Info provided a closer look at the history between the two horses before the race:
The muddy conditions may have impacted Nyquist, as he did not look as fast and powerful as he did during his performance at Churchill Downs. He held the lead for much of the race before slowing down considerably down the stretch.
It did not affect Exaggerator, who turned on the jets for the final quarter of the race to take the lead. USA Today's Dan Wolken noted that Exaggerator had an advantage in the wet conditions, but that Nyquist jockey Mario Gutierrez could have been better:
Nevertheless, Nyquist trainer Doug O'Neill congratulated the Exaggerator crew after the race:
Exaggerator trainer Keith Desormeaux said he plans on entering his horse into the Belmont Stakes on June 11, per Martin. It looks like Nyquist will join him, according to Blood-Horse's Jeremy Balan:
At 1 1/2 miles, the Belmont Stakes is the longest of the Triple Crown races. This could favor Exaggerator, as he should have a little extra time to build his energy and make a blistering run down the stretch.
Nyquist's team will have him ready for vengeance, and he will be sharp in a few weeks. Expect an exciting race even without the prospect of a Triple Crown.
