Go Maggie Go's win ensured that only one favorite has won the Black-Eyed Susan in the last 11 years, per the NBC Sports broadcast.
The favorite, Land Over Sea—who has the same jockey (Mario Gutierrez) and trainer (Doug O'Neill) as Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist—struggled mightily.
She was done about six furlongs into the race, as she dropped back and was unresponsive to Gutierrez's efforts to get her going into the far turn before finishing in sixth place.
Instead, Go Maggie Go and Kinsley Kisses got out of the gates fast and stayed in front for most of the race.
Kinsley Kisses held the lead at the 1/4-mile and 1/2-mile marks before Go Maggie Go made her move on the final turn.
Go Maggie Go opened up a comfortable advantage on the homestretch to finish the race out in convincing fashion, while Ma Can Do It snatched second place from Kinsley Kisses in the final strides.
Romans became the first trainer since Max Hirsch in 1947-48 to win the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes two years in a row.
Gutierrez and O'Neill will hope Friday's results don't carry into Saturday, or else their Triple Crown pursuit will end prematurely.
But now that the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes has whetted America's appetite, all eyes will focus on the Preakness.
