WWE SmackDown Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from May 19

Erik BeastonMay 20, 2016

Four-way rivalries are typically difficult to pull off because, all too often, they consist of two guys with a central beef and two others who are there just to fill out the field.

As seen on Thursday's SmackDown broadcast, though, WWE Creative has crafted a compelling and unpredictable feud involving The Miz, Cesaro, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn that not only solidified their claims to "biggest winner" status from the May 19 episode, but also elevated the importance of the historic Intercontinental Championship.

One or two Superstars have not been spotlighted at the expense of the others, nor has any one feud taken precedence. All four competitors have been molded and meshed together to create a legitimate four-person rivalry with no clear-cut superior, creating drama for this Sunday's championship clash.

Add to the superb writing a strong match between Cesaro and Owens, and the continued interactions between the combatants was the biggest highlight from an otherwise monotonous presentation from the blue brand.

Not all of the WWE Superstars to appear on Thursday's show were as lucky as the aforementioned competitors, including a woman once considered the future of her division.

Loser: Paige

There was a time when Paige was perceived as the face of women's wrestling in WWE. Exploding onto the scene in 2014, she was the emphasis for change in the company. The arrival of three of NXT's Four Horsewomen, though, relegated her to a supporting role. Now, with the success of Charlotte, Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch, Paige finds herself in a state of irrelevance.

That status was hammered home Thursday night as she was essentially squashed by Dana Brooke.

Not once throughout the course of the match did the Brit ever look the equal of her opponent. Instead, she was beaten down and defeated in short order, an afterthought in a match designed to put her opponent over.

There are few Superstars who have been done such a great disservice by the implementation of the New Era as Paige, and that pattern continued into SmackDown, where the former Anti-Diva felt as irrelevant and inconsequential as ever.

Loser: Sheamus

At one point in the last six months, Sheamus was the WWE world heavyweight champion and lead villain. That time seemed like an eternity ago Thursday night as he made his first appearance in weeks, a pinfall loss to Dolph Ziggler.

The League of Nations was a painfully generic faction of foreign villains, one that proved to be a setback for everyone involved. Sheamus is no different. The split of the group should have returned The Celtic Warrior to relevancy, but instead, it led to his absence from television at a time when one would assume WWE would want to capitalize on his appearance in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.

Sheamus is in an unenviable position, a member of the old guard at a time when WWE is focusing on new and fresh. There is a possibility he sees his role expand after Extreme Rules, especially with the returns of John Cena and Seth Rollins. For now, though, it is difficult to imagine a scenario where he returns to prominence, especially with AJ Styles, The Club and other recent NXT call-ups receiving more television time.

Winner: Luke Gallows

Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson have not been presented as strongly as they should have been throughout their first month with WWE, but on Thursday night, Gallows squared off with Roman Reigns in the main event of SmackDown and never looked out of place. In fact, he controlled the majority of the match.

Gallows is no stranger to high-profile bouts in WWE. A former member of The Straight Edge Society some six years ago, he regularly competed against The Undertaker and Rey Mysterio, to name a few, putting his athleticism and agility on display.

A better big man than he gets credit for, Gallows reminded fans of his skill Thursday night, even if tag team competition is his main focus at this point.
