Liverpool Transfer News: Robert Lewandowski, Yacine Brahimi, Latest Reds Rumours

Rory MarsdenMay 19, 2016

Liverpool are reportedly still hoping to sign "ambitious target" Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich in the summer, despite missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification for next season.

The Reds' 3-1 defeat to Sevilla in Wednesday's UEFA Europa League final means they will not take part in any European competition in 2016-17.

But Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp reportedly remains "keen" on persuading striker Lewandowski to move to Anfield, having previously managed the prolific Pole at Borussia Dortmund, per Jack Wilson in the Daily Star.

Lewandowski is rightly regarded as one of the best strikers in the world and was the top scorer in the Bundesliga in the 2015-16 campaign, per UEFA Euro 2016:

At Bayern, he plays a key role in one of the best sides in the world, and it seems highly unlikely he would trade in the chance to fight for Bundesliga and Champions League titles to move to Liverpool.

Indeed, Bleacher Report's Dean Jones previously indicated the 27-year-old would only leave Bayern if it meant joining Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Given the Klopp connection, a Lewandowski move to Liverpool could have been conceivable had the Reds won the Europa League.

But after their defeat to Sevilla—in a performance that proved Liverpool have a long way to go before they join the European elite again—it now seems the Reds will have to lower their ambitions when it comes to signing a new striker.

A potential purchase to bolster the attacking ranks could reportedly be Porto's Yacine Brahimi, although the Mirror's Ed Malyon indicated the Merseyside club have yet to make an approach:

The Algerian is able to play either as a central striker or across the forward line, and his versatility will be attractive to Klopp.

The German manager has used the likes of Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho in a variety of forward positions in 2015-16, and Brahimi, 26, could add necessary depth to the Reds' fluid attacking core.

Meanwhile, Liverpool centre-back Kolo Toure admitted following the Sevilla defeat that he is unsure as to whether his future lies at Anfield, with his contract set to expire next month, per Sky Sports' Lyall Thomas:

"

I don't know [about my future] to be honest. I am just enjoying my time in this club—a fantastic club and fantastic supporters. We will see what will happen and you will have to ask that question to the manager.

Of course I want to stay. It's a great club to play in, but the manager has his plan and any decision I will respect. [Klopp] is a top manager and he knows what he is doing.

"

Now 35, the Ivorian has been at Liverpool since 2013, and there is set to be a defensive overhaul in the summer—which has already begun with the signing of Schalke's Joel Matip.
