Another stunning batting performance from Kohli on Wednesday took his total for the season to an outstanding 865 runs. According to Bharath Seervi of ESPNcricinfo, he became the first player to reach 4000 runs in the IPL overall as he overtook Suresh Raina's 3985.
To make his century even more impressive, the 27-year-old managed to achieve the feat in just 50 balls in a 15-over match. Cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle could scarcely believe it, while colleague Ayaz Memon was lost for words:
Kohli converted 20 of the 50 balls into boundaries, eight of which were sixes.
When combined with fellow opener Chris Gayle's excellent 73 from 32, Bangalore eventually finished their innings on an incredible total of 211.
Sky Sports Cricket hailed Kohli's contribution when he was eventually dismissed by Sandeep Sharma:
Per ESPNcricinfo, he said:
"When all that was happening out there, I thought surely I can't get a 100 in 15 overs. I wasn't believing that it was happening. ... My main aim is to get runs, it doesn't matter how I play. Momentum is a big thing in T20s, when you get into the zone, you feel you can hit any ball. So you just want to give yourself. I didn't hit any balls because I was injured, but when I settled down, I thought I shouldn't think about my stitches. When I got the flow going, and the pain went away, I was able to play shots.
"
The tally puts him 268 clear of his nearest rival, team-mate AB de Villiers. As in stark contrast, the South African was bowled for a duck by Kyle Abbott when he dragged one onto his stumps.
Memon highlighted his change in fortune:
De Villiers remains just 30 runs ahead of David Warner, and the Sunrisers Hyderabad batsman has a game in hand.
RCB were also exceptional with ball in hand as they bagged nine wickets in 14 overs and restricted their opponents to 120.
Chahal got four of those in his three overs, the first time he has done, so according to Seervi:
Shane Watson grabbed two wickets at the cost of just seven runs in his two overs, so he sits level with his team-mate on 16 for the season.
Against the sixth-placed Delhi Daredevils in their next outing, RCB's players will stand an excellent chance of improving their positions further.
