Preakness 2016 Post Positions: Updated Odds for Entire Lineup After Draw
The field for the 141st Preakness Stakes is set after the post-position draw from Pimlico on Wednesday evening.
Here is the 11-horse field, headlined by Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist:
| 1 | Cherry Wine | Corey Lanerie | Dale Romans | 20/1 |
| 2 | Uncle Lino | Fernando Perez | Gary Sherlock | 20/1 |
| 3 | Nyquist | Mario Gutierrez | Doug O'Neill | 3/5 |
| 4 | Awesome Speed | Jevian Toledo | Alan Goldberg | 30/1 |
| 5 | Exaggerator | Kent Desormeaux | Keith Desormeaux | 3/1 |
| 6 | Lani | Yutaka Take | Mikio Matsunaga | 30/1 |
| 7 | Collected | Javier Castellano | Bob Baffert | 10/1 |
| 8 | Laoban | Florent Geroux | Eric Guillot | 30/1 |
| 9 | Abiding Star | J.D. Acosta | Ned Allar | 30/1 |
| 10 | Fellowship | Jose Lezcano | Mark Casse | 30/1 |
| 11 | Stradivari | John Velazquez | Todd Pletcher | 8/1 |
Nyquist kept his perch as the Preakness favorite as his morning line was revealed at 5-3. He drew the No. 3 post, which plays right into his wheelhouse given his ability to start races strong and maintain a quick pace.
That means that he won't have much work to do to establish a lead on the inside of the short track. If he's able to get that quick start, there's no catching him despite the speed horses that are in this field.
Exaggerator, the runner-up to Nyquist in the Kentucky Derby, is the second favorite with 3-1 odds. He's lost four races to the Derby winner in which he's tried everything from a late push down the stretch to attempting to stay with him right out of the gates.
It's unlikely he'll be able to stay with Nyquist again on the 1 3/16-mile track. If the track was longer, like it will be at the Belmont, then Exaggerator could have a more legitimate shot at an upset.
Look for Stradivari, the third favorite, to hang around Nyquist to start. This is a horse who can provide a nice early jump which could keep him close to Nyquist. If he has a finish like he did at Gulfstream Park in December, then things could get interesting:
What's going against Stradivari, though, is that this is an inexperienced horse who's run only three races in its career, so questions of consistency will arise.
When looking at consistency and sheer power, it'll be difficult to choose against Nyquist, who is in the pursuit of history.
