20 Bizarre New Sports Commercials

Laura DeptaMay 18, 2016

Tom Brady's new commercial for Beautyrest Black mattresses is strange, but it's not even close to the weirdest new sports ad of 2016. Anyone who watched Super Bowl 50 and saw Mountain Dew's "Puppy Monkey Baby" knows that.

Bizarre sports ads from all over the world can be found on the Internet. Most are sports-related by virtue of starring a famous athlete, but a couple of Super Bowl ads are sprinkled in as well.

Remember, bizarre doesn't necessarily mean bad. Those baby Damian Lillard State Farm ads are pure gold, but still weird. In fact, there are a lot of variations included in the following list—bizarre/creepy, bizarre/hilarious, bizarre/confusing, bizarre/fantastic—and they're all entertaining in their own way.

Here they are: 20 bizarre new sports commercials, warming up with "just a little odd" and working toward "full-blown crazy town" at No. 20.

Rickie Fowler for Farmers Insurance

1 of 20

Pro golfer Rickie Fowler is in a commercial about rodents falling in love.

Need more? OK. The Farmers Insurance ad works off the premise that its company will cover "almost anything," including a "romantic rodent." In a very Caddyshack-esque scene, one such furry friend scurries down a tunnel on a golf course to meet his lady love.

He proposes marriage with a lovely ring covered, of course, by Farmers Insurance.

Alexis Sanchez for Master Dog

2 of 20

Chilean football star Alexis Sanchez is apparently a dog lover, so it makes sense he would star in a commercial for Master Dog dog food.

The ad is actually quite cute. The weird part is the extreme slobbering Humber and Atom bestow upon their master's face. Sure, dogs are affectionate, but these doggy kisses take it to a new level.

Pete Rose for William Hill

3 of 20

Pete Rose received a lifetime ban from Major League Baseball for gambling on games. Until recently, he was publicly attempting to have that ban overturned.

And yet, he appeared in a commercial for the William Hill mobile sports betting app in February. It was all tongue-in-check, but come on man. William Hill's tagline is literally "the home of betting."

Perhaps Rose was salty that MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred denied his latest application for reinstatement, but if he's still holding out hope at all, this could not have helped the cause.

Ronaldo for HOT

4 of 20

Portuguese football sensation Cristiano Ronaldo showed up in this ad for Israeli communications company HOT in February. The gist is a connection between Ronaldo's on-field speed and that of HOT's Internet connection.

This ad is bizarre and confusing in this sense: How did the company get Ronaldo to star in their cheesy ad?

*On a serious note, Ronaldo was criticized by Palestinians and pro-Palestinian activists on social media for appearing in an ad for an Israeli company, according to Jack Moore of Newsweek.

Boban Marjanovic for World Car

5 of 20

Boban Marjanovic is listed at 7'3", so it's not likely that any car he inhabits could be described as "roomy."

And yet, that's what World Car claims about a Nissan Armada in this ad starring the San Antonio Spurs center. Oh, and it also has an "awesome" sound system.

Marjanovic's acting might not be close to credible, but he is still hilarious.

Rugby Players for Haribo Tangfastics

6 of 20

Big rugby players—itty-bitty voices. This ad for Haribo Tangfastics is great, but it is bizarre to hear grown men talk about gummy candy with little-kid voiceovers.

Apparently the candy tastes like "fire and a little bit of electricity." Yowza!

Tom Brady for Beautyrest Black Mattresses

7 of 20

Tom Brady's newest commercial for Simmons' Beautyrest Black mattresses is not weird in a crazy way. It's weird in a James Bond way, if that makes sense.

Brady is led through a hotel lobby like the VIP he is, ultimately traveling through a secret door, down a long hallway and into a room that contains only a naked mattress.

Somehow, it feels like if this were a car commercial, it wouldn't be weird at all. Then again, the mattress he's touting does cost nearly $5,000, and the ad sure got people talking. So, well done overall.

Alex Morgan for Nike LunarEpic

8 of 20

U.S. soccer star Alex Morgan recently starred in a short ad for a new Nike running shoe, the LunarEpic. The idea is simple: open the shoe box, be transported to a super "cool" place.

If you're into bizarre disco video game scenes and minimal dialogue, this one is for you.

Luis Suarez for Pepsi

9 of 20

Uruguayan footballer Luis Suarez came out of a video game to befriend a young fan in a new commercial for Pepsi.

The two become buds, bonding over everything from hairstyles to pickup lines, then Suarez strongly suggests his new pal drink Pepsi. The whole thing is strange, but the creepy selfie filter pushed it over the edge into bizarreland.

Steven Tyler for Skittles

10 of 20

The broadcast of Super Bowl 50 featured several weird commercials (honorable mention to Xifaxan and the sports fan that is actually an intestine). Instead of inundating you with all those, however, only a couple of especially strange ones are included here.

First up, Steven Tyler and the Skittles portrait of weird.

This one counts as a sports commercial merely by its categorization as a Super Bowl ad, but it counts as bizarre because of the creepy, singing portrait made of Skittles. Yikes.

Jori Lehtera for Ruislastu

11 of 20

St. Louis Blues center Jori Lehtera notched a goal in his team's Game 1 win over the San Jose Sharks in the Western Conference Final, but his talents obviously extend beyond the ice as well.

Check him out in this ad for Ruislastu, a kind of snack chip made in his native Finland.

It all starts out normally enough in an office with a presumed agent of some kind. Then it starts to look a lot like a Calvin Klein ad, then an action movie—and it just spirals from there. It's actually not a bad commercial—odd, yes. Bad, no.

Mike Tyson for Michael and Son Services

12 of 20

Mike Tyson appeared in a local Washington D.C. ad for a plumbing and heating company during Super Bowl 50.

That's all you need to know, but just let that sink in. Tyson is one of the greatest boxers in history. Yes, he's obviously an odd guy, but he's also uber-famous. So this was surprising, even for a guy who races pigeons for fun.

Kudos to Michael and Son Services for pulling off the epic cameo.

Cesaro for Vianor

13 of 20

WWE wrestler Cesaro starred in a recent hidden-camera-inspired ad for German tire company Vianor.

Here's the scene: Some wrestling fans come into the shop for a tire change and get quite the surprise when a WWE-style fight breaks out. The reaction is a mixture of shock and laughter as the absurd fight continues to devolve.

A button is pressed, and Cesaro magically appears through a cloud of smoke in his skivvies, ready to save the day. Weird, right?

Thor Bjornsson for SodaStream

14 of 20

(Warning: There's a tiny bit of bleeped NSFW language at the end of the video.)

Yes, Thor Bjornsson plays The Mountain in Game of Thrones, but he's also the world's strongest man, so this counts as sports-related.

Bjornsson's April Fool's ad for HeavyBubbles sparkling water is weird, clever and not at all what it seems.

It has plenty of crazy—a bloody bathtub, a man who turns into a skeleton and Bjornsson walking through a sheet of glass. But as it turns out, it's ultimately not an ad for HeavyBubbles at all, but for SodaStream, a more environmentally friendly way to consume sparkling water.

Robot Ronaldo for Turk Telekom

15 of 20

Cristiano Ronaldo just can't stop doing weird commercials. (You've seen this Japanese ad for a "facial fitness tool," right?)

In this new ad for a Turkish telecommunications company, Ronaldo plays a robot—which, given his chiseled physique and otherworldly talent, doesn't actually seem entirely far-fetched.

Robot Ronaldo malfunctions, the world freaks out and the only way to restore the Portuguese superstar is to enlist the help of Turk Telekom.

State Farm, 'Droppin' Dimes'

16 of 20

State Farm's "The Hoopers" commercials featuring NBA stars Damian Lillard and Kevin Love are utterly delightful. Oh, they're weird all right, but in the best way.

In "Droppin' Dimes," Lillard raps as Love stands by, dropping literal coins. Love's head is superimposed on the body of a teenager, and Lillard plays a rapping infant.

State Farm veteran Chris Paul is there, too, but he's a mere afterthought in the Lillard-Love show.

By the way, there are other gems in this series. For example, "Robbed" also features Kevin Garnett as Grandpa Hooper and DeAndre Jordan as the family matriarch.

Estudiantes de Caracas and the Unborn Babies

17 of 20

Estudiantes de Caracas certainly earns points for creativity with this one. The Venezuelan football club developed technology that could pit unborn babies against each other in a virtual match (that's right) and then used it to create an ad.

This was accomplished through fetal monitors attached to pregnant mothers. According to Vice Sports' Liam Daniel Pierce, the translated YouTube caption reads, "We want to share with you our commitment to the new generations of Venezuelan soccer with our new 2016 commercial! An idea that demonstrates our faith in national football!"

The idea is clear and even a little heartwarming, but let's be honest. It's fetuses playing soccer.

WWE for Extreme Rules

18 of 20

WWE made a video to promote its Extreme Rules event in May, and the first 18 seconds feature two bugs, well, mating.

That may or may not be NSFW, so just in case, better check it out at this link.

The scene is definitely more weird than raunchy—it's insects, after allbut there's no denying it's a bizarre choice.

James Harden for Trolli

19 of 20

PSA: Trolli actually makes a gummy in the shape of James Harden's beard.

Also, the Houston Rockets guard starred in a commercial for the candy company that is almost too bizarre to explain. Suffice it to say, the commercial involves what looks like a Russian matryoshka doll, except the doll is Harden's head, eyeball laser beams and a Trolli brain.

The ad itself describes Trolli as "weirdly awesome." Indeed.

Puppy Monkey Baby for Mountain Dew Kickstart

20 of 20

Baby legs, monkey body and a dog head—yes, that qualifies as bizarre. The Super Bowl ad for Mountain Dew Kickstart features one of the weirdest creatures you'll ever see. Careful not to watch too many times—this is the stuff that will haunt your dreams.

Words and phrases used to describe the ad on social media included "terrified," "godless nightmare" and "scarring me for life," as compiled by Yahoo Sports.

Ultimately, however, this is a classic example of the "no press is bad press" mantra since the reaction blew up the Internet.
