Manchester United Transfer News: Latest on Anthony Martial, David De Gea Rumours

James DudkoMay 15, 2016

Anthony Martial has maintained he's happy at Manchester United amid reported interest from Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain.

Former Monaco striker Martial only joined the Red Devils last summer, but reports have emerged that a number of clubs, including PSG, have recently approached his representatives.

Simon Jones of the Mail on Sunday provided details about the growing interest in United's French forward:

Paris Saint-Germain have expressed an interest in Anthony Martial but the striker says he is happy at Manchester United.

Martial has been one of the few success stories for United this season and the club has no intention of selling the 19-year-old who cost them £36million from Monaco last summer.

Martial's representatives have had approaches from different clubs to gauge how content he is at Old Trafford. PSG are considering alternatives to Zlatan Ibrahimovic who is to leave the French champions this summer with United his preferred option.

"

United's reluctance to part ways with Martial so quickly is understandable considering the investment they made in him last summer, when the Old Trafford club paid Monaco £36 million.

PSG reportedly view Martial as a potential replacement for Ibrahimovic.

It was a deal that made the then-19-year-old the most expensive teenager in world football, per BBC Sport, and one that could rise to £58 million depending on performance-related clauses.

Martial has shown the talent to eventually merit the inflated fee. His combination of pace and power hints at the world-class match-winner within.

The glimpses of his incredible potential have come from the 17 goals and three assists he's supplied United during his debut season, per WhoScored.com.

Martial has been one of United's rare match-winners this season.

Yet keeping Martial around long-term may hinge on United's ability to offer UEFA Champions League football every season. It's an opportunity the club may have missed this season after a costly 3-2 defeat at West Ham United.

The Red Devils are three points behind fourth-placed neighbours Manchester City. But United still have one more game to play this Premier League season after their home fixture against Bournemouth was abandoned following a security alert, per the division's official site:

To overhaul City into fourth, United would need to turn around a substantial goal difference, per the table. It seems unlikely, so United could miss out on Europe's premier club competition for the second time in three years.

If so, Champions League clubs are likely to firm up their interest the more Martial impresses.

Louis van Gaal Insists David De Gea Will Stay

If there's uncertainty over Martial's future, United are keen to avoid more of the same involving goalkeeper David De Gea. Manager Louis van Gaal has insisted the Spanish stopper won't leave for Real Madrid this summer, according to Jack Wilson of the Daily Star:

"

It was written that it was inevitable that he would go to Real in 2016. But it’s not like that.

In this world of football you never know. It can always happen — but I don’t think so. He is very comfortable here.

He has said that many, many times, not only to me but also to his colleagues and the fans — in interviews or things like that — and he’s extended his contract.

"

The saga between United, De Gea and Real reached its peak last summer when the gifted 'keeper seemed set to return to the Spanish capital, but the deal fell through in the 11th hour.

Van Gaal has insisted De Gea won't leave for Real Madrid.

As Van Gaal pointed out, De Gea promptly agreed to a new United contract, one set to keep him at Old Trafford until 2019.

Yet with Van Gaal's own future far from certain, it's not clear how much stock should be applied to the under-pressure manager's words regarding De Gea.

Jose Mourinho is still lurking as a possible replacement for Van Gaal, although Sky Sports' Rory O'Callaghan reported there's no agreement between United and the Portuguese coach.

Whoever's in charge next season will surely want De Gea between the sticks. He's perhaps the best 'keeper in the game, a stopper who both saves and earns points for United on a consistent basis.

With Martial leading the attack and De Gea rolling down the shutters at the back, United will retain the right ingredients to get back among Europe's elite. Without them, though, the spine of this squad would need a complete overhaul.
