Which Coach Will Be Jim Zorn's Replacement?

StonCold LockSep 30, 2009

A few big names come to mind when you think about Jim Zorn’s replacement.  Unless a miracle happens this season, it’s almost inevitable that Zorn get’s fired either mid-season or at the end of this season.  There a long list of big name coaches out there on the free agent market including Bill Cowher, Mike Holmgren, Mike Shanahan, and Jon Gruden.  Dan Snyder has the money to go after that big name and it fits his M.O.  He tried with the no name, small guy, Jim Zorn, and look where that’s gotten the Redskins?

If I had to rank the list of elite potential coaches, it would have to be Cowher, Gruden, Shanahan, and Holmgren.  Cowher gets a slight nod over Gruden because he has a longer successful resume.  Cowher and Gruden over the other two because they bring the intensity needed to shape up this lackluster Redskins team.  Shanahan and Holmgren are great coaches and GMs but if Snyder doesn’t get rid of his “boy,” Vinny Cerato, I can’t see them taking the job.  They are not going to let an inexperienced GM run the show, they will want total control.

My first choice is Bill Cowher.  He would bring some discipline and fire to the team.  This team needs someone to kick its rear end.  Someone who doesn’t play around and will get results.  Cowher’s the man.

Here’s a quick run down of Coach Cowher’s stats:

  • 1 Superbowl (2005)
  • Career winning pct of .623
  • 10 playoff appearances in 15 seasons
  • 2 Superbowl appearances
  • 6 AFC Championship appearances

Cowher’s coaching tree also includes some impressive names:

  • Mike Tomlin
  • Ken Wisenhunt
  • Chan Gailey
  • Jim Haslett
  • Marvin Lewis
  • Dom Capers
  • Dick LeBeau
