Back in 2014, Sarries not only missed out on European glory, they were also downed in extra time of the Aviva Premiership final a week later by Northampton Saints.
They could make amends in both competitions this year having finished atop the Premiership table once again—they will play their semi-final against Leicester Tigers on May 21.
Rather than put the disappointment of two years ago out of their minds, though, Saracens are eager to use it as motivation, with backs coach Kevin Sorrell outlining the lessons they can learn from the defeat to Toulon when they face Racing, per Rugby Tonight:
As Sorrell noted, concentration could be the key in deciding how Saturday's final pans out.
Saracens cannot afford to switch off for a moment as Racing will punish them if they are given any space to work in, but the English club also have players who can take advantage of any lapse in their opponents' focus.
Much has been made of the intriguing fly-half battle set to take place between Carter and Saracens No. 10 Owen Farrell.
The pair's respective place-kicking efficiency could be a key factor in deciding the game in Lyon, but their tactical play and decision-making will also be vital.

Carter is rightly regarded as one of the best No. 10s of all time, and Farrell will have to put in a near-perfect performance if he is to eclipse the New Zealander and lead his side to victory.
But the England man has been one of the top performing players in the Premiership this season and has shown in his recent international outings that he has what it takes to perform against the very best.
Given his profile and quality, it would be tempting to speculate that Saracens could earn an edge by simply taking Carter out of the game.
However, Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall is aware of what a challenge that is and insisted the way to take Carter out of the game is to dominate other areas of the match, per the Daily Mail's Chris Foy:
"It’s a big, big mistake to think you’re going to go and get Dan Carter. Carter’s been doing this for a very long time, so we’ve got to make sure that his influence in the game isn’t huge.
If we can do that it means our pack have got on top in the scrum and in the lineout. It means we’ve put a little bit more pressure on him than he’s experienced before. But if you run down his channel and think you’re going to shake him up, you’re not going to.
"
Sarries' strength in the pack will be vital if they are to beat Racing and lift the European Champions Cup on Saturday.
Their scrum boasts the likes of Billy and Mako Vunipola, Schalk Brits, George Kruis and Maro Itoje, all of whom could play a big role in Lyon.
If Saracens can starve Carter and the excellent Machenaud of the ball, they have the impact runners and flair out on the flanks to run in the necessary scores.
However, give Racing's half-back pairing too much time and they will find a way to punish Saracens.
The two teams are evenly matched, and it is likely to be a closely fought battle as Saracens look to right the wrongs of two years ago, while Racing aim to triumph in their first European final.
