Liverpool vs. Chelsea: Guus Hiddink's Key Quotes from Pre-Match Presser

Interim Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink has downplayed claims of this being a "disaster" season for the Blues and has insisted a decision on the future of club stalwart John Terry lies with the board.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday's trip to face Liverpool at Anfield, Hiddink appeared to suggest "football disasters" tend to be blown out of proportion, per ESPN FC's Liam Twomey:

With just two games remaining in his Stamford Bridge tenure, the Dutchman can perhaps afford to underplay a disappointing season in west London; however, his hint at football's concerns being exaggerated may well have some truth to it.

One major topic up for discussion was Terry's future at the club, but Hiddink reiterated it's not his decision whether or not the 21-year Chelsea veteran receives a new contract, per Simon Johnson of the London Evening Standard:

"

When I make a judgement how he plays and his fitness at his age, then he is able to continue. Where? It's up to the club what his near future is, it is not for me to make declarations on that. Whether it's his last game is not up to me.

Whatever will happen whether he stays, whenever he goes, he deserves a huge goodbye.

But it's never goodbye with those players because whatever happens with those kind of players, after a period of going away and calming down, they can have an impact in the culture of the club. They can be very useful.

"

Johnson reported Chelsea fans intend to use their remaining matches against Liverpool and Leicester City to send a message to the board that they want Terry to remain with the club for at least another year.

The 35-year-old is approaching the end of his current deal but recently told the YouTube channel of Danish club Brondby that he wants to play at Chelsea "for a couple more years," per Jefferson Lake of Sky Sports.

Hiddink will not be able to call upon his veteran for the last two games of the season either, with Terry suspended after picking up a red card in last Saturday's 3-2 defeat to Sunderland.

At the twilight end of his career, there's a chance Terry may contemplate retirement should he fail to earn a new Chelsea deal, and Hiddink suggested his charge is well suited to management, per the club's official Twitter account:

The outbound tactician insisted he won't pass squad information to successor Antonio Conte and added his goodbye "won't be forever" when he departs this summer, but he'll be involved "away from the spotlight."

While Chelsea's prospects for the end of this season are nowhere near where they wanted, Liverpool are fighting to finish as high as fifth, and Hiddink is wary of their threat, per Chelsea's official website: "It’s a very energetic team which Klopp has formed. They can be very resilient; they were down against Dortmund and made it up in the last second. They have a skilful team but also a strong team."

Motivation may be low for the west Londoners considering they currently sit in ninth, 10 points below the Reds and already as high as they can hope to finish.

Hiddink will seek to record a strong finish to the campaign, but with only two wins in their last 10 games, the Blues may struggle in their visit to face Europa League finalists Liverpool.
