Trophee Hassan II 2016: Leaderboard Scores, Prize-Money Payouts

Rory MarsdenMay 8, 2016

Jeunghun Wang prevailed in a play-off against Spain's Nacho Elvira to secure the 2016 Trophee Hassan II after the pair had both finished at five under after 72 holes on Sunday.

The Korean's putting was quite brilliant, and he holed a 15-footer for birdie on the second of the sudden death play-off holes to claim a maiden European Tour triumph.

Elvira had looked in pole position for victory after getting on the 18th green in two on the first of the play-off holes, but Wang produced a wonderful up-and-down to force a second.

The pair both birdied the 18th in their final rounds to move into the lead at five under par, a score that proved too good for the rest of the field, including Day 4 pace-setters Robert Rock and Clement Berardo.

Here is what the final leaderboard looked like at the end of the final day's action in Morocco:

Sunday Recap

Elvira's wonderful approach in the first of the play-off holes forced Wang to also go for the green in two, and he ended up in trouble in the trees.

He managed to scramble to the edge of the green and then holed a gigantic putt for birdie to force Elvira to get up and down just to force a second play-off hole, when previously it looked as though he would only need a minimum of two putts to win the championship, per the European Tour:

Driving off down the par-five 18th again, Wang put himself in a prime spot while Elvira was in trouble. The Spaniard then found the fringes with his third and could not get down for birdie, leaving Wang with a putt for the championship.

Again on the 18th, for the third time in succession, he produced a clutch putt to earn victory in impressive fashion, per the European Tour:

Elvira and Wang both made late charges to head the leaderboard after 72 holes, while Rock and Berardo slipped off the pace in tricky conditions during Sunday's final round.

The Spaniard's 69 was one of the rounds of the day and came courtesy of three birdies in the back nine after going out in level par.

Elvira followed back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13 and 14 with a brilliant four on the par-five last—having put his approach to two feet—to go into the clubhouse with a lead, via the European Tour:

Meanwhile, Wang holed an excellent curling 15-footer on the last to draw level with Elvira. The Korean also picked up shots in his final round on nine and 12, while he bogeyed the eighth, per the European Tour:

The Englishman Rock had put himself in contention after 14 holes of his final round, with birdies on three, 12 and 13 putting him in a tie for the lead with Berardo.

But back-to-back bogeys on 15 and 16 did for his challenge, and he had to settle for a tie for third despite a birdie at the last.

The Frenchman Berardo stayed just in the lead after the turn as he scrambled for par on 10, 11 and 12 before making a three on the par-four 13th to get to six under par.

But he also endured a late collapse, bogeying 14, 15 and 17 to put paid to his chances of making the play-off.

Saturday's leader Chris Hanson endured a topsy-turvy final round to eventually finish fifth. He carded bogeys at four, 11, 15 and 16, a double at eight and birdies at six, 12 and 18, making for a three-over 75.

The European Tour now moves on to Mauritius for the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, which begins on Thursday.
