Kentucky Derby Results 2016: Video Replay, Times Chart, Triple Crown Predictions
Time to forget American Pharoah—Nyquist has arrived.
Nyquist, trained by Doug O'Neill and jockeyed by Mario Gutierrez, bested Saturday's field at the 2016 Kentucky Derby in the most routine way possible.
Gutierrez got Nyquist out in front of the pack, let the burners gas themselves and turned it on down the stretch to post the best time at the race since 2003, according to ESPN Stats & Info.
In the process, no horse looked like it had a chance against Nyquist, which isn't so surprising when one remembers he entered as a winner in all seven appearances.
Now it's time to wonder if Nyquist and those around him can make it 10-of-10. Based on Saturday's results, it's hard to doubt a back-to-back feat.

Triple Crown Analysis

Nyquist owner Paul Reddam sure looks ready to have another.
Cheesy, maybe, but back in 2012 Reddam had what looked like a surefire Triple Crown winner on his hands with I'll Have Another, who breezed through the first two legs before being unable to participate in the final race due to an injury.
Now, Nyquist looks capable of offering a bit of redemption.
Las Vegas pegged him as a heavy favorite after four of those seven aforementioned races were Grade 1 events featuring several Derby hopefuls. As one can glean from the replay, though, few stood a chance once the gates opened.
Speaking of Las Vegas, the odds that Nyquist pulls in the Triple Crown sit at 5-2, according to Odds Shark. Call it a line worth taking, as his main competition didn't hold up well at Churchill Downs. Gun Runner made a late push but burned out. Exaggerator had problems creating separation from the pack.
Level of competition will play a factor in the Triple Crown outlook. Or maybe Nyquist is just that good. Regardless, Yahoo Sports' Pat Forde hit the proverbial nail on the head:
"For a field of 20 horses running 1¼ miles for the first time, it was an amazingly formful race. None of Nyquist's prime competitors encountered major racing misfortune Saturday, so there aren't a lot of excuses to be had. Suddenbreakingnews, finishing fifth and flying late, was the only one of the top finishers that had a difficult trip, according to the postrace chart.
"
Indeed, injury might be the biggest thing standing in Nyquist's way now.
Every year owners and jockeys choose to ignore the Kentucky Derby and target the other two legs because the three-stretch race is too brutal and winning the Triple Crown is so seemingly unrealistic.
Those horses might stand a better chance than the ones who suited up Saturday, but with the historic pace Nyquist set without suffering down the stretch, it's hard to imagine even those rested contenders have a prayer.
Call it vindication. If American Pharoah hadn't won last year, Nyquist would have been one of the most hyped horses of all time, given the resume and the thirst for a winner to break the 38-year Triple Crown drought.
Instead, Nyquist and those around the horse entered Saturday having to hear a bevy of reasons they wouldn't pull off a win. He then turned the narrative on its head and woke more than a few people up to the realities of his abilities.
‘‘His run was awesome,’’ Reddam said, according to the Associated Press' Beth Harris. ‘‘Obviously, we were going to take it to ’em. I love the way that we fired out of there and he sat behind Danzing Candy. This horse, he’s really something. We’re just really lucky to be a part of that.’’
There's no reason to doubt Nyquist now.
Unpredictable fields and a rough stretch created the drought that lasted nearly 40 years. But American Pharoah showed the globe last year what an eventual Triple Crown winner looks like—and Nyquist looks just the same.
When it comes to predicting the Triple Crown, it has become less guesswork and more about the chalk play. And Nyquist is still the chalk play if there ever was one; he refuses to lose and even sets eye-popping speed numbers without fatigue in the process.
Barring an injury, Nyquist looks ready to seize the spotlight he's rightfully earned.
Prediction: Nyquist wins Triple Crown.
