Arsenal Transfer News: Latest on Daniel Sturridge and Alexis Sanchez Rumours

Matt JonesMay 7, 2016

Arsenal’s need for a new centre-forward will reportedly prompt the club into making a £30 million bid for Liverpool goal-getter Daniel Sturridge.

That’s according to Andy Dunn of the Sunday Mirror, who has stated the Gunners will make an offer once the summer transfer window opens, with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger on the lookout for an upgrade on Danny Welbeck and Olivier Giroud.

Arsenal might not have too much competition for the England international should the Reds opt to sell, Dunn saying a move to Chelsea or Manchester City is “out of the question.”

Dunn added: “A fee for Sturridge would be tricky to negotiate. Liverpool would rate him way above the £30million level but bidders would point to his injury issues as a reason for a reduced mark.”

As these numbers from Squawka Football prove, despite his injury issues, the striker typically finds the back of the net when he's on the field:

As Dunn noted, there have been some small signs the striker isn’t the man Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp wants to lead the line.

While Sturridge played and scored in the UEFA Europa League semi-final victory over Villarreal on Thursday, prior to that, the German has opted for a striker-less system or used Divock Origi, who is injured, at the point of the attack. Still, after his heroics against the Yellow Submarine, Klopp hailed the striker as “outstanding” and an “unbelievable player,” per Dunn.

It’s clear, despite suggestions otherwise, the striker is happy at Liverpool too. These snaps show that, per journalist James Dutton:

Arsenal certainly need a striker, and a player of Sturridge’s calibre would be a huge boost to Gunners. The Liverpool man is so sharp in the penalty area and clinical when chances come his way; Wenger’s side with a player such as him leading the line would be a fearsome proposition.

Nevertheless, if Sturridge stays fit, continues improving under Klopp and keeps on putting the ball in the back of the net, the Reds would surely do all they can to keep him at the club.

Juventus Looking at Alexis Sanchez

According to Football Italia, Juventus could join Manchester City and Bayern Munich in pursuit of Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez.

In the piece, it’s said “papers in England” have reported the Chile international is frustrated and that he could “look elsewhere in the summer.” It’s noted the Italian champions tried to sign Sanchez from Barcelona in 2014 before he opted for the Emirates Stadium and when he was a Udinese player in 2011.

Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph reported on Friday that Arsenal face a fight to keep their star forward at the club and are unsure as to whether he’ll sign a new contract. Sanchez has two years left on his deal.

Spanish football expert Rafael Hernandez can see City launching a bid, especially given Pep Guardiola, who will take over at the club next season, signed the Chilean during his time at Barcelona:

Sanchez’s angst may come from the fact he’s endured a difficult campaign. After taking the Premier League by storm in his debut season, he’s found it tough to recapture the same levels in this one, looking a little jaded. His lack of spark has been one of the many contributing factors in a season in which the Gunners have failed to seriously challenge for the title once again.

If Sanchez refuses to commit his future to the football club, then it leaves Arsenal in a difficult situation. The supporters will not want to see the 27-year-old leave as he’s one of the club's key players. But should the Gunners keep him beyond the summer without a new deal being signed, doubts will be raised.
