Kentucky Derby 2016 Payout: Finishing Times, Prize-Money Earnings for Field

Timothy RappMay 7, 2016

Well, Nyquist certainly didn't disappoint.

After coming into the 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby as the prohibitive favorite, Nyquist earned his eighth straight win with a strong run Saturday, handling the early speed of Danzing Candy and the late push of Exaggerator to earn the win.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Nyquist's time (2:01.31) was the fastest at the Derby since Funny Cide won the race in 2003. Here are the full results:

Here's the full race replay, per NBC Sports:

Jockey Mario Gutierrez and Nyquist truly ran the perfect race, hanging with the leaders early without overworking, hitting the final turn hard and holding off the late burst from Exaggerator to not only win but to win with a dominant final time.

"We got a beautiful trip from the start to the end," Gutierrez said, per ESPN.com.

Exaggerator should be fairly familiar with the result—he has lost to Nyquist four times now.

But it wasn't due to the horse running a poor race. Rather, Nyquist was just that good, which left Chris Fowler of ESPN quite impressed:

Meanwhile, Saturday's victory also vaulted Nyquist up trainer Doug O'Neill's personal rankings, per Jeremy Balan of BloodHorse.com:

"This is such a special horse," O'Neill added, per ESPN.com. "You can see it in his eye on a daily basis and he's such a professional. Any human sport, he'd be the top-notch athlete. He's just first class.''

So now Nyquist heads to the Preakness Stakes, which should be a favorable race for him, given his excellent speed and the ability to maintain a strong early pace without burning out too quickly. Frankly, given the Derby's result, it will be the Belmont Stakes that should cause Nyquist more issues.

And in that vein, it wouldn't be surprising to see Keith Desormeaux save Exaggerator for the Belmont Stakes. Exaggerator's late speed should play perfectly in New York but seems less suited for the shorter track at Pimlico for the Preakness.

While it will be intriguing to see how the Preakness field shakes out, there's little question that Nyquist will be the overwhelming favorite once again. As Andrew Brandt of ESPN noted after the horse's win on Saturday night, "A star is born."

Indeed, Nyquist appears to be a star in the same vein as American Pharoah before him. There won't be 37 years of anticipation surrounding his quest for the Triple Crown. But there's little question now that Nyquist appears to be capable of accomplishing the most prized feat in horse racing.
