Kentucky Derby Results 2016: Final Race Chart, Finishing Times and Purse

Danny WebsterMay 8, 2016

Start all of the Triple Crown talk for Nyquist. This horse might be unbeatable.

Nyquist is now a perfect 8-for-8 after winning the 142nd Kentucky Derby Saturday at Churchill Downs. Jockey Mario Gutierrez won his second Derby as well, after leading the 2-1 favorite down the home stretch for the historic win.

Now, it's on to the Preakness. Nyquist is listed as a slight early favorite to be the first of that field to cross the finish line in Baltimore. For the final time, let's take a look at the results of the Kentucky Derby and the purse information and then look forward to May 21 for the second leg of the Triple Crown.

Nyquist's Odds To Win the Preakness

Nyquist is the early favorite to take home the Preakness in two weeks, but it'll be a close call to win the Belmont Stakes, according to Odds Shark.

Nyquist is listed at minus-170 to win the Preakness and plus-120 that he will lose his first race. That same plus-120 figure also applies to his chances to win the Belmont Stakes.

As for the Triple Crown, that is not outlandish. While the odds are at minus-400 that he will not win all three events, Nyquist is at plus-250 to win the Preakness and Belmont Stakes and join American Pharoah among horse racing's elite. Those are reasonable numbers.

Dan Wolken of USA Today thinks the Preakness is a possibility, but Nyquist's luck will run out at Belmont.

At odds of 2-1, Nyquist became the fourth favorite in a row to win the Run for the Roses, per Childs Walker of the Washington Post. American Pharoah was the only one of that bunch to snap the Triple Crown drought, ending it at 37 years.

It's also rare to have back-to-back Triple Crown winners as well. It's only happened once. Affirmed, who won the Triple Crown in 1978 and was the last before American Pharoah, followed the performance of Seattle Slew one year later.

The first step to that journey is complete for Nyquist, but now the task is to win the next two. Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore is slightly shorter than Churchill Downs (1 3/16 miles compared to 1 1/4 miles). After he ran a smooth, constant race Saturday, distance shouldn't be an issue for Nyquist going forward.

He didn't dominate, but Nyquist ran smoothly from the moment he exited the starting gate. That kind of performance should bode well heading into the Preakness and eventually the Belmont. Put money on Nyquist well before race day.
