Nyquist bested American Pharoah's winning time from last year's Derby by 1.71 seconds and turned in the best performance by a winner in 13 years, according to Ron Flatter of CBS Sports Radio:
By virtue of Saturday's triumph, Nyquist earned his team $1,631,600. The following is a look at what each of the top five finishers pulled in, courtesy of KentuckyDerby.com:
| $2,391,600 | $1,631,600 | $400,000 | $200,000 | $100,000 | $60,000 |
Nyquist entered the race as the clear favorite with 2-1 odds, and he carried on the recent tradition of the top betting choice winning the Kentucky Derby, per Dan Wolken of USA Today:
In his seven races leading up to the Derby, Nyquist was unbeatable. That remains true after Saturday, which applies to only a select group of horses in the history of the sport, according to ESPN Stats & Info:
While there is no question that Nyquist was excellent Saturday, he was far from a runaway winner, as Exaggerator gave him a challenge down the stretch.
Jeremy Balan of Blood-Horse was particularly impressed by the manner in which the Keith Desormeaux-trained and Kent Desormeaux-ridden horse was able to close the gap:
While one might assume that Exaggerator's run made for some nervous moments for Nyquist's team, trainer Doug O'Neill said that wasn't the case, per Blood-Horse on Twitter:
Nyquist cemented his status as the top three-year-old with Saturday's win, and the focus is already starting to shift toward the Preakness Stakes.
After American Pharoah's Triple Crown victory last year, there is plenty of talk that Nyquist could potentially make it two in a row.
Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports is among those who believe he has the talent to accomplish the feat:
The combination of O'Neill and jockey Mario Gutierrez brought I'll Have Another to within one win of taking the Triple Crown in 2012, but an injury forced them to withdraw him from the Belmont Stakes.
They know what it's like to get close to making horse racing history, and the motivation to have another opportunity could be huge in terms of leading Nyquist to a Preakness win as well.
Nyquist was the best horse in a fast field Saturday, and if he is able to maintain that pace and receives another strong trip from Gutierrez at the Preakness, then a second consecutive Triple Crown is a realistic possibility.
