Nyquist was the heavy favorite to win the 2016 Kentucky Derby; according to KentuckyDerby.com, he closed with 2-1 odds.
Before heading to Churchill Downs, Nyquist was a perfect 7-of-7 in competitive races, cementing his status with a convincing victory at the Florida Derby.
Jockey Mario Gutierrez didn't have Nyquist fire out of the gate and into the lead. Instead, the colt waited back and let Danzing Candy set the pace early on.
According to KentuckyDerby.com, only one horse (War Emblem in 2002) won the Derby in wire-to-wire fashion since 1988, so history hasn't favored the quickest starters at Churchill Downs.
Gutierrez's strategy proved fruitful when Danzing Candy began slipping as the race headed around the third turn. Gun Runner briefly enjoyed the lead, but Nyquist moved into first around the final turn.
Exaggerator was the faster horse heading into the finish line, but the distance between him and Nyquist was too much to cover in such a small distance.
SB Nation had some fun with the finish of the race:
| Nyquist | $6.60 | $4.80 | $3.60 |
| Exaggerator | - | $5.40 | $4.20 |
| Gun Runner | - | - | $6.00 |
According to ESPN Stats & Info, Nyquist was the eighth unbeaten winner in Derby history.
Despite the horse having to fight hard to maintain his spot, trainer Doug O'Neill was never in doubt.
"There's no way you could be nervous," he said, per the Blood-Horse. "It's like going to a gym with Kobe Bryant."
"His run was awesome," said owner J. Paul Reddam, per ESPN.com. "Obviously, we were going to take it to 'em. I love the way that we fired out of there, and he sat behind Danzing Candy. This horse, he's really something. We're just really lucky to be a part of that."
Now, the question will be whether Nyquist can maintain his perfect record at the Preakness Stakes on May 21. Yahoo Sports' Pat Forde is already embracing the discussion:
Only once have horses won the Triple Crown in back-to-back years, with Seattle Slew and Affirmed pulling off the feat in 1977 and 1978.
Even if Nyquist is unable to match American Pharoah's historic 2015 season, he already left his impression in the history books with Saturday's triumph.
