Wells Fargo Championship 2016: Saturday Leaderboard Scores and Highlights

Joe PantornoMay 7, 2016

The third round of the Wells Fargo Championship from Quail Hollow Country Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, is in the books without much change atop the leaderboard.

Rickie Fowler had a wild day but managed to make it a good one. He finished with a four-under to go nine under for the tournament, putting him in first place heading into Sunday.

It all started well enough for Fowler with a pair of birdies on the front nine and another into the turn on No. 10 to go three under.

But bogeys on Nos. 11 and 13 dropped him back down in the field before he composed himself and birdied three consecutive holes on Nos. 14, 15 and 16.

After two bogeys in quick succession, some golfers might have wanted to play a bit more timid. Not Fowler, though, who was able to drive the green on No. 14 to set up his first birdie of that stretch, as the PGA Tour showed:

He had a chance for eagle on No. 15, which came tantalizingly close to dropping from over 70 feet, via the PGA Tour:

Fowler had to settle for a birdie instead and followed it up with a monstrous 340-yard drive on No. 16 to set up his last birdie of the day.

The birdie putt wasn't easy, as it had to roll over 27 feet of uneven green, via the PGA Tour:

He leads Roberto Castro, who remains in second for the second straight day as he is just one stroke off the lead at eight under.

Like Fowler, Castro had a pair of birdies on the front nine before a pair of bogeys on the back. But birdies on Nos. 13 and 17 ensured he would remain at two under on the day.

It was his solid putting that put him in contention heading into the final day. Castro gained 1.794 strokes during this tournament, well above the PGA Tour average of minus-0.001.

Friday's leader Andrew Loupe struggled Saturday, but he managed to stay among the top two for most of his round as he was even after 17 holes.

He combated four bogeys with four birdies, including one that came just after this flop shot on No. 7, via the PGA Tour:

But disaster struck on No. 18 with a double bogey that dropped him from eight under to six under for the tournament. He is now tied for fifth.

Among notable golfers not toward the top of the leaderboard is Rory McIlroy, who is tied for 19th. He shot a one-over on the day, sits at one under for the tournament and had to scramble just to stay that low.

McIlroy recorded four bogeys on the day and added a double bogey on No. 9 to conclude the front nine at two over. He improved a bit with three birdies and a pair of bogeys to get one stroke back, but he'll have plenty of work to do.

Even on a subpar day, he managed to leave the crowd on No. 17 in awe when he dropped this huge birdie putt from over 79 feet out, via the PGA Tour:

It's a tight field that doesn't leave much room for error heading into the final day. But given the way the course didn't offer low-scoring numbers Saturday, there is some margin for error on the leaderboard.

That doesn't mean the leaders could make a habit out of it, because it will only take one golfer to have a day like Fowler had on Saturday to take the title.
