Ingolstadt vs. Bayern Munich: Winners and Losers from Bundesliga

Clark WhitneyMay 7, 2016

Bayern Munich clinched a record fourth consecutive Bundesliga title on Saturday as they beat Ingolstadt 2-1 at the Audi Sportpark in Ingolstadt.

In any case, the victory would have seen Pep Guardiola and company crowned champions, but combined with Borussia Dortmund's loss to Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern increased its lead in the German top division to eight points with one match left to be played.

Robert Lewandowski put Bayern ahead from the penalty spot six minutes after Ingolstadt's Marvin Matip fouled Franck Ribery inside the box. Lewandowski completed his brace on 32 minutes, and Bayern smoothly sailed to victory.

Shortly before the half-time break, Moritz Hartmann won a penalty after being felled by Xabi Alonso, and converted to cut Bayern's lead in half. The hosts were unable to draw level after the interval, though, and Bayern were able to celebrate their league triumph with three points.

Following Saturday's action, here are those who gained and lost the most over the 90 minutes. Click "Begin Slideshow" for the winners and losers from the match.

Winner: Robert Lewandowski

It was Robert Lewandowski who gave Bayern hope in the Champions League on Tuesday as he put Bayern ahead of Atletico Madrid, and it was Lewandowski who got the goals the Bavarians needed to clinch first place in the Bundesliga.

The Polish striker converted his 40th goal of the season from the penalty spot to put Bayern ahead. Although his first goal was a bit of a gift, Lewandowski's second was pure genius as he produced a brilliant finish across Ramazan Ozcan to make it 2-0.

With his pair of goals on Saturday, Lewandowski pulled four clear of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for first place among the Bundesliga's top scorers. The Bayern man's 29 goals in the German domestic league have played a huge role in his club's success, and he deserves to lift the trophy.

Loser: Xabi Alonso

Xabi Alonso had a great game on Tuesday against Atletico Madrid and started the first half well against Ingolstadt. He was tidy in possession and, although he let Thiago do much of the work in attack, took his opportunities to influence the game in an advanced position.

Alonso played a magnificent through ball to Lewandowski for Bayern's second goal, a ball with the signature of a playmaker.

However, things went sour for Alonso late in the first half. First, he committed a foul on Moritz Hartmann to concede a penalty kick. Shortly thereafter, the 34-year-old picked up an injury and had to be replaced at half-time.

Sky reporter Torben Hofmann wrote on his Twitter (in German) that Alonso had been taken to the hospital, which does not bode well for his chances of participating in Bayern's final Bundesliga match or the upcoming DFB-Pokal final. Time will tell the extent of Alonso's injury, but at the moment, it doesn't look good. It's a shame for the player and Bayern, because he'd been in good form.

Winner: Pep Guardiola

3 of 3

Bayern's Bundesliga triumph has indeed set a new record, one that coach Pep Guardiola has thoroughly earned. Although the former Barcelona man did not coach the Bavarians in all four title seasons, he has in the last three.

Having taken 85 points from 33 games thus far, Bayern will, regardless of the result in next week's finale against Hannover, end this season with the third-best points tally in Bundesliga history. The first place spot on that list was Jupp Heynckes' 2012-13 side that earned 91 points, and the runners-up were Guardiola's team from the following year that managed 90.

Many have legitimately faulted Guardiola for falling short of expectations in the Champions League, with the Bavarian giants failing to reach the final in each year of his tenure after managing three finals in four years prior to his arrival. However, no one can deny his success in the Bundesliga. For that, he deserves credit.
