Jamie Carragher Slams Marouane Fellaini After Ban for Robert Huth Elbow Incident

James DudkoMay 7, 2016

Jamie Carragher has launched a scathing attack on Manchester United's Marouane Fellaini, dubbing him a "menace in the worst possible sense."

The former Liverpool defender insisted, "My personal hope is that we would never see him playing in the Premier League again."

Writing for the Daily Mail, current Sky Sports pundit Carragher took Fellaini to task after the Belgian midfielder received a three-match ban for elbowing Leicester City's Robert Huth during a recent 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

Carragher stated Fellaini is not a "United player in any shape or form" and that his frequent physical outbursts mean he should also be banned for the club's FA Cup final against Crystal Palace at Wembley:

"

It can't be right that he will be available for Manchester United's big day against Crystal Palace on May 21.

[...]

Three games is not a sentence that will prove a deterrent to Fellaini. He is a repeat offender and it has gone beyond the point now where people can attempt to defend him by saying he is a tall lad who is using his arms for leverage.

"

Carragher is adamant Fellaini knew what he was doing when he swung an arm at Huth in the box. The Foxes centre-back was seemingly grabbing at Fellaini's hair before the Belgian responded.

But Carragher is not convinced both players should have received the same punishment: "Can pulling someone's hair cause the same damage as a flailing elbow? No. Not in a million years."

Carragher also believes Fellaini has and will never change his ways, specifically the propensity to use his arms as a weapon. The former Reds defender bemoaned the fact Fellaini "escaped retrospective punishment" following a clash with Emre Can during Liverpool's last-16 UEFA Europa League tie with United earlier this season.

Referencing his own experiences of playing against Fellaini, Carragher called the player out for not improving his behaviour during eight years in England's top flight:

"

I hated playing against Fellaini. You knew from the word go you had to keep your wits because of his aggression. In one Merseyside derby, TV cameras showed me telling the referee to "watch Fellaini's elbows" — he always featured in our team talks because he was so awkward.

"

To emphasise the point, Carragher also made it clear he feels Fellaini's antics and style have no place with his great on-pitch rivals: "I was never convinced he would fit in at Old Trafford when he left Goodison Park and have never been given reason to change my mind. Yes, he's a good player with some qualities, but he is absolutely not United standard."

Many United supporters may share the same view about Fellaini's perceived lack of quality. He's never really been a popular figure since moving to United in 2013.

In truth, Fellaini's talent on the ball is often underrated. Yet, that is usually due to his best attributes being lost amid the bad press his many disciplinary issues receive.

It's a problem he's never learned to control, and one Carragher believes he never will: "Personally I hope we don’t see his elbows in England again."

Things are sure to change at Old Trafford this summer, and this latest incident could be enough to finally push Fellaini through the exit door. But history shows that if another Premier League side takes a chance on the towering midfielder, his issues controlling temper likely won't go away.
