Leicester vs. Everton: Winners and Losers from Premier League

Karl MatchettMay 7, 2016

Leicester City celebrated their Premier League title win on Saturday after hammering Everton, 3-1, which could have easily been worse.

The Foxes started well as Andy King set up Jamie Vardy with a great cross, with the top scorer netting from close range for the team's first goal. Riyad Mahrez then teed up King to double the lead just after the half-hour mark, with Everton barely mounting an attack at all in the first half.

Leicester maintained their high tempo for the second 45 minutes too, winning two penalties of which Vardy scored one and missed the other to complete the scoring.

Here are the biggest winners and losers from Saturday's match in King Power Stadium.

Winner: Riyad Mahrez

1 of 5

Mahrez, the PFA Player of the Year, put in a performance worthy of the award on Saturday, especially in the first half, as he gave Everton's defenders a torrid time right from kick-off.

The Algerian zipped past challenges in off the right flank with great frequency and speed, committed defenders to open space for others and set up numerous chances with selfless passing in the final third.

Mahrez didn't trouble the scorers this time but was the focal point for much of Leicester's pressing and their ability to keep Everton on the back foot.

Loser: Roberto Martinez

2 of 5

Everton manager Roberto Martinez hasn't been a fan favourite in recent weeks and months as his team slid down the table. An FA Cup semi-final exit effectively ended their season, and Martinez's players looked like they were on holiday at the King Power Stadium.

The organisation in defence was poor, the team selection a little underwhelming given injuries and unavailability and big-money winter signee Oumar Niasse was distinctly average once more. It didn't help that Kevin Mirallas, whom Martinez ignored for a long time, came on to play reasonably well and score the consolation goal.

How much longer does Martinez have at Everton?

Winner: Andy King

3 of 5

One of the few changes for Leicester this week was bringing King into the lineup, and he responded with a great display on both halves of the pitch.

King set up one and scored another in the first half, was first to the ball after tackles and incisive with his distribution in the final third.

Sky Sports awarded him Man of the Match for a top-class performance, and he more than justified the role handed to him in the final weeks of the season, with Danny Drinkwater unavailable more than once.

Loser: Leighton Baines

4 of 5

If Everton left-back Leighton Baines was looking to make a late break into the England squad for UEFA Euro 2016, this was not the way to do it.

Mahrez absolutely rinsed Baines on numerous occasions, and he failed to impact at all in the attacking half and didn't help the young defender next to him, Matthew Pennington.

Baines was exposed by a lack of effort in front of him but did nothing positive to contribute to Everton's performance overall either.

Winner: Jamie Vardy

5 of 5

Vardy is having a party.

The Leicester striker was a threat from the first minute, as he was running in behind the defence and looked full of confidence. He led the line as he has all season and simply played far too well for Everton's back line to cope with.

His first goal was typical of his campaign: a fine run across the defender and a close-range finish that displayed both anticipation and composure. Vardy netted a penalty to move within a goal of Harry Kane in the top-scorer list and should have moved level but blazed a second spot-kick over the bar.
