2016 Kentucky Derby Odds and Betting Props: Nyquist, Exaggerator, Mohaymen
Nyquist, the +300 (bet $100 to win $300) favorite on the odds to win the Kentucky Derby, will start from the No. 13 post position on Saturday. That has the group of Gates 11 to 20 set as the betting favorite to win the Run for the Roses this year at sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark.
The Gates 11 to 20 group is the -250 favorite to produce the Kentucky Derby winner Saturday on the props board for the race, with the Gates 1 to 10 group set as the +170 underdog on those betting lines. Along with Nyquist, the higher gates also feature the second and third favorites to win the race in Exaggerator (+750) and Mohaymen (+800).
Gun Runner (+900) starts from post No. 5, with Creator (+1200) set up in the third gate.
Since 1900, the No. 13 post position has produced just four Derby winners, with Nyquist hoping to bump that number to five on Saturday. The No. 5 post position leads the way with 13 victories over that span.
Will Secretariat's record-setting Kentucky Derby time of 1:59:40 be broken at Churchill Downs on Saturday? No horse has run the Kentucky Derby in a time of under two minutes since 2001, with American Pharoah running the race in a time of 2:03:02 last year. That has the no side set as the big -4,000 favorite on the Secretariat record prop, with Yes at +1,000 odds.
The winning horse has had an average winning time of 2:02:48 in the last five years; the over/under for the winning time at this year's Kentucky Derby is pegged at 2:02:90.
American Pharoah, of course, went on to win the Triple Crown last year. This year's Kentucky Derby favorite, Nyquist, is at +900 odds to repeat the feat, which would require victory Saturday and then in the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes as well. Mohaymen is at +1,800 odds to win the Triple Crown, while Exaggerator would pay off at +3,000 odds.
As for head-to-head Kentucky Derby props, Nyquist is a -240 favorite to finish ahead of Exaggerator (+165) and a -250 favorite to finish ahead of Mohaymen (+170). The Exaggerator (-125) vs. Mohaymen (-115) matchup is closer heading into Saturday's race.
