Evolution of the Kentucky Derby Purse
To understand the purse of the Kentucky Derby, one must consider how far the race has come since 1875.
Of course, there are a lot of factors to take into account. There's the matter of Reconstruction, two World Wars and the evolution of race tracks in general.
The first Kentucky Derby race took place on May 17, 1875. There were an estimated 10,000 spectators on hand at a racetrack yet to be called Churchill Downs, according to the event's official site. Aristides won the first race and with it a purse of $2,850.
In 1908, Kentucky Derby spectators bet a total of $67,570 at Churchill Downs, and $18,300 was bet on the Kentucky Derby—nearly nine times the winning purse from Aristides' victory.
Nearly 40 years after Aristides' win, the winning purse nearly doubled in 1913. Donerail won $5,475 and was also the winner with the longest odds up to that point. Those who bet on Donerail to win won $184.90.
The purse widened once again in 1915, when Regret, the first Filly to win the Kentucky Derby, scooped a $10,000 purse, per Greg Kocher of the Lexington Herald-Leader. According to Kocher, Churchill Downs manager Matt Winn was looking to get horses from all over the country. He thought that purse would bring trainers from far and wide to go for the prize.
Fast forward to 1954. Nearly 50 years after Regret made history, the winning purse exceeded $100,000 for the first time. This had to be possible as a result the first national broadcast of the Derby in 1952. By that time, the Run for the Roses became more profitable than ever before. Not only had it become a national phenomenon, but the Kentucky Derby became an entity in the sports world.
When Smarty Jones won in 2004, first place won $854,800 out of a $1.18 million purse. That spike over the course of 50 years shows how far the Kentucky Derby has come in terms of popularity, marketing, profit and overall appeal to the United States of America.
This year's winnings mark another increase in the last 12 years, and it should be expected that number goes up in the next 10 years. Horse racing's popularity seems to be growing, and it comes full circle every year at the Derby.
