Anthony Edwards FaceTimed KAT Before Every NBA Finals Game to Give Him 'Cheat Code' for Wemby, Spurs
Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards revealed during an appearance at Fanatics Fest in New York on Friday that he gave advice before every NBA Finals game to his ex-Timberwolves teammate and current New York Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns about how to play against Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs.
ESPN's Kalan Hooks provided video featuring Edwards' remarks about Towns, who helped lead the Knicks to a five-game victory over the Spurs in the NBA Finals and FaceTimed Ant after the championship win.
"I was turned up. It may have been like three in the morning when [Towns] FaceTimed me after the game. But yeah, I was talking to him before every game, because we play San Antonio. So you know, just give him little tips and stuff on which players like to go which way and stuff about Wemby. So yeah, I gave him a little cheat code, and he passed the test, so shoutout KAT."
Edwards and the Timberwolves faced the Spurs in the second round of the playoffs. San Antonio won four games to two. Minnesota also played San Antonio three times in the regular season for a total of nine matchups.
So Edwards saw San Antonio a lot this season, three times as much as the Knicks (two regular season matchups plus the NBA Cup final).
Edwards and Towns were teammates on Minnesota from 2020-21 to 2023-24. After that season, the Timberwolves traded Towns to the Knicks.
However, the two maintained a close relationship, and Towns even shouted out Edwards in an interview with ESPN's Scott Van Pelt after the Knicks won the NBA Finals.
"A huge shoutout to the all teammates I've had before coming here. Shoutout to my brother, Anthony Edwards, [I'm] talking to him all the time," Towns said postgame (h/t NBA Central). "Those guys made me better. Made me a better leader, made me a better player, made me the man I am today. Forever grateful for them."
Wembanyama played very well over Games 2 and 3 of the NBA Finals, scoring 30.5 points on 56.4 percent shooting. However, he shot just 33.8 percent over Games 1, 4 and 5 (21.7 percent from three).
Towns played a big role defending Wembanyama during the series, and he was recognized for his efforts. Perhaps he took some advice from Edwards and utilized in the Knicks' historic victories.
