Kentucky Derby 2016: Post Time, TV Schedule and Livestream Hub for 142nd Race

Matt FitzgeraldMay 6, 2016

The 2016 Kentucky Derby post positions were revealed on Wednesday, which made it easier to project how the 142nd Run for the Roses might unfold this Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

Nyquist opened as the 3-1 morning-line favorite, but the field of 20 is rather condensed in terms of odds thereafter. A trio of No. 3 co-favorites emerged, along with Exaggerator with the second-shortest odds at 8-1.

With a No. 13 post position, Nyquist drew a decent slot in the starting gates for Saturday's Triple Crown opener that has a post time of 6:34 p.m. ET.

Trainer Doug O'Neill expressed plenty of confidence in Nyquist's Kentucky Derby outlook following Wednesday's post-position reveal—and wasn't too concerned about where his horse would line up in the first place.

"No matter if we drew the one or the 20, the thought is we were going to leave there with the intent of being forwardly placed and just play it by ear," said O'Neill, per the Associated Press' Beth Harris. "More than anything, I'm so happy with the way he's training, the way he's acting. He's thriving on all the positive attention."

Considering he's won seven races in as many career outings, there's reason to buy into the hype surrounding Nyquist. However, it is worth noting the Kentucky Derby hasn't had an undefeated champion since 2008's Big Brown.

Perhaps it's worth wagering on another horse based on that history—and the longer odds of even someone like Exaggerator have to be tempting to bet on.

Exaggerator did win his last start at the Santa Anita Derby on a sloppy track and ran his best race to date. Before then, he recorded second- and third-place finishes at the San Vicente Stakes and San Felipe Stakes, respectively.

Although he doesn't have the winning resume Nyquist does, Exaggerator has proved himself against top-tier competition before. His blend of strength, stamina and speed to run away from the Santa Anita Derby field also showed he's a fully capable Kentucky Derby winner when he's firing on all cylinders.

NOLA.com's Katherine Terrell believes in Exaggerator based on his proven competitive grit—most prominently on display at Santa Anita Park:

But the best blend of prior results and pedigree may be co-No. 3 favorite Mohaymen. Hailing from a lineage that features Triple Crown winners Seattle Slew and Secretariat, Mohaymen finished fourth in the Florida Derby, which Nyquist won.

Before that Mohaymen had claimed victory in all five of his previous races. Between his family history and the aforementioned discouraging precedent surrounding prior undefeated horses who enter Churchill Downs for The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports, Mohaymen is a bargain of a wager at 10-1.

The fact Mohaymen and Nyquist are starting next to each other, with Exaggerator only a couple of spots inside the latter, means all three ought to be able to avoid traffic issues out of the starting gates.

Those circumstances should set up an epic final few furlongs in Saturday's Kentucky Derby with a few top contenders who've proved they can close as well as any current three-year-old colt in the business.
