WWE Extreme Rules 2016: Full Card Predictions After Payback
WWE Extreme Rules 2016 will feed off the bad blood that Payback stirred up, continuing the unsettled battles from Sunday's pay-per-view.
Fans already know what the next world title bout will be. The McMahons announced that Roman Reigns will take on AJ Styles in an Extreme Rules match at the upcoming PPV of the same name.
The rest of the Extreme Rules card promises to look familiar, too. Charlotte is not finished fending off Natalya. The Miz has more European uppercuts in his future. Baron Corbin's attempt to devour Dolph Ziggler will continue.
Looking at current storyline arcs and foreshadowing on TV or at Payback and projecting the most logical moves for WWE to make can help us foresee what the Extreme Rules lineup will look like.
The Miz vs. Kevin Owens vs. Cesaro vs. Sami Zayn (Intercontinental Championship)
1 of 6WWE didn't hide what it intends to do regarding the Intercontinental Championship following Payback. A quartet of men smashed into each other in Chicago, signaling a four-way feud for the belt.
While Cesaro tried to dethrone The Miz on Sunday's pay-per-view, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens brawled at ringside. That distracted Cesaro enough to cause him to lose. Soon after, Owens was clobbering The King of Swing, Owens went after The Miz and a full-scale slobberknocker broke out.
The path is set now for a Fatal 4-Way at Extreme Rules.
WWE can now continue the Zayn-Owens feud, add layers to the rivalry between The Miz and Cesaro, all while making the IC title feel more coveted. Plus, the company will be assured of a thriller by booking this bout.
Becky Lynch vs. Emma
2 of 6Tension rose between Becky Lynch and Emma after WrestleMania. Each woman talked trash about the other in various interviews. It looked clear that WWE was setting up something between them, but just before Payback the narrative fizzled out.
WWE likely thought the Payback card too full and pulled back on the Lynch-Emma story. With two rivalries merging into one in a hunt for the Intercontinental Championship, that opens up space on the stage for this midcard battle.
Prepping Sasha Banks for a title chase in the summer would be the better move, but WWE has made no indication that it has that in mind. Instead, it planted the seeds for Lynch and Emma to go at it. And those seeds are poised to sprout just before Extreme Rules.
The New Day vs. The Vaudevillains (Tag Team Championship)
3 of 6Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady may well have been in line to nab the No. 1 contender's spot at Sunday's pay-per-view, but the match never got off the ground.
Amore injured himself in a nasty fall out of the ring. Dave Meltzer reported on F4WOnline.com that the popular star suffered a severe concussion.
With just three weeks until Extreme Rules, expect WWE to slide Amore out of the title picture while he recovers and instead let The Vaudevillains take on The New Day.
That's a more traditional matchup of babyface and heel than if The New Day faced Amore and Big Cass anyway. WWE can introduce Aiden English and Simon Gotch to a bigger audience by having them collide with The New Day.
Expect that to be the top tag team feud for the moment, at least until Amore is cleared.
Baron Corbin vs. Dolph Ziggler (Street Fight)
4 of 6Baron Corbin has to be seething after losing to Dolph Ziggler at Payback. He had The Showoff beat but toyed with him, batting him around like a cat does a stunned mouse.
Ziggler, though, earned a fluky win, a result that teases at a rematch at Extreme Rules.
An angry Corbin will most certainly seek redemption. And WWE is going to want to give Corbin a big win to continue the momentum he gained by winning the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal at WrestleMania.
The Lone Wolf's desire to destroy Ziggler makes a Street Fight a perfect fit. As this feud becomes more intense, it will need a more extreme stipulation to house all that animosity.
Kalisto vs. Rusev (United States Championship)
5 of 6Kalisto didn't squeak by Ryback at Extreme Rules; he beat him convincingly. That and the lack of narrative surrounding this matchup suggests that The King of Flight is set to move on to a new foe.
Rusev fits well in the David-versus-Goliath dynamic WWE has played out with Kalisto so much.
And with The League of Nations now disbanded, The Bulgarian Brute is free to seek out the title he lost over a year ago. That's an easy way to give Rusev focus.
Plus, these two have looked good against each other in their brief previous meetings.
Natalya vs. Charlotte (Women's Championship)
6 of 6At Extreme Rules, Natalya and Charlotte can finally put a definitive end to their rivalry.
The Women's Championship has eluded Natalya at each turn thanks to Ric Flair-created controversy. Natalya bringing Bret Hart with her to ringside at Payback was supposed to counteract the presence of Charlotte's father. Instead, WWE ran with a repeat of The Hitman's infamous loss at Survivor Series 1997.
That leaves an unsatisfied taste in the audience's mouth and assures Natalya of one more title shot. Getting so close to the championship has served as a tease to the eventual climax, one that Extreme Rules now looks poised to host.
Hopefully, WWE decides to give these women a stipulation worthy of the pay-per-view's theme.
That will not only add to the conclusive feeling to this part of the story but will also be progress for the women's division as a whole. The women are too often ignored when it comes to handing out gimmick matches.
