Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez Would Be a 'Massacre,' Says Bob Arum
Boxing promoter Bob Arum thinks Gennady Golovkin would “massacre” Saul Alvarez should the two middleweights go toe-to-toe in the near future.
A possible showdown between the illustrious fighters took a step closer to becoming a reality on Saturday, as GGG bludgeoned his way past Dominic Wade, knocking his opponent out in Round 2.
Arum feels that if he was to tackle Canelo, there’d only be one winner, per the Los Angeles Times (h/t Edward Chaykovsky of BoxingScene.com):
"All the clamour for Canelo-Golovkin, you think that’s an even fight? So put it off as long as possible, hope [Golovkin] gets beat and it goes away, or that [Golovkin] gets old. Fans want everything right away.
The promoters have to do what’s best for their fighter. Canelo is good, but Triple-G with Canelo is a massacre. It’s one thing to lose a decision to [Floyd] Mayweather. It’s another thing to get counted out by Golovkin.
"

Arum, the chief executive of Top Rank, knows what the promoting business is all about and has no clear allegiances to either fighter. His opinion is one plenty in the boxing stratosphere will share, with Golovkin’s career record now standing on 35 wins from 35 fights, with all but three coming inside the distance.
The man himself posted the following clip of his brutal finishing shot against Wade on Twitter and said he was looking to dominate the division:
Golovkin does seem to be on a collision course with Alvarez. The Mexican star will face Amir Khan on May 7 in Las Vegas for the Lineal, Ring and WBC Middleweight World Championship titles.

Since losing to the now-retired Floyd Mayweather in 2013, Alvarez has won four fights back-to-back, the most recent being an impressive performance against the dogged Miguel Cotto. Should he beat Khan, as is expected, then an autumn showdown between he and the Kazakh is what fight fans around the world would love to see.
As reported by Chaykovsky, the WBC has demanded the winner of Canelo-Khan face Golovkin later in 2016, although Golden Boy, which promotes Alvarez, doesn’t want the bout until 2017.
But with GGG gathering so much momentum, a lot of fight fans won’t see the point of him facing anyone else at this juncture. As reported by boxing writer Steve Kim, some illustrious names think Golovkin should be held in particularly high regard already:
If these two were to face off, GGG would most likely start as a narrow favourite. Canelo is a wonderful fighter and a hardened competitor, although almost every man Golovkin has faced as of late has felt the power of this extraordinary puncher. The Mexican, as talented and tenacious as he is, would find that brute strength tough to cope with.
Putting the fight off for a spell could potentially change that, as Arum alluded to in his quotes. But if Alvarez was to beat Golovkin, outworking him would most likely form the basis of his fight blueprint.
