Dele Alli Facing Potential FA Ban After Appearing to Punch Claudio Yacob

Rory MarsdenApr 26, 2016

Tottenham Hotspur's Dele Alli could be sanctioned by the Football Association and banned for Spurs' run-in after he appeared to punch West Bromwich Albion's Claudio Yacob in the stomach during Monday's 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane.

Per Sky Sports' Ben Nagle, the pair clashed in the Spurs penalty area during the opening 45 minutes, and Alli appeared "to throw a punch at Yacob's stomach."

Referee Mike Jones missed the incident at the time, but Alli could still face "retrospective action from the FA" that may lead to a three-match ban, per MailOnline's Sami Mokbel.

As Spurs have only three games of their Premier League campaign remaining, they face the prospect of being without the newly crowned Professional Footballers' Association Young Player of the Year for the rest of the season.

It would be a huge blow for Mauricio Pochettino's second-placed side as they remain in the hunt for the title, although Monday's draw with West Brom has left Premier League leaders Leicester City needing just one more win to claim the trophy.

The young playmaker has been a revelation this season having moved to Spurs from MK Dons, and he has made a massive contribution to the side, per Squawka:

Per Bleacher Report's Dean Jones, Alli was fully deserving of his PFA award:

However, his transgression on Monday was evidence of a less attractive side to his game that has also seen him apparently kick Fiorentina's Nenad Tomovic in a UEFA Europa League match, while he was accused of kneeing Crystal Palace's Yohan Cabaye in the head in January, per Mokbel.

Speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, both Jamie Carragher and Graeme Souness said such incidents are part of a "learning curve," which should see the 20-year-old become a top player, via Nagle.

But, if he is banned for the last games of the season, it could end Spurs' admittedly very slim title chances, as they will need their strongest side if they are to pick up the necessary wins against Chelsea, Southampton and Newcastle United to keep the pressure on Leicester.
