Liverpool Transfer News: £35M Aaron Cresswell, Callum Wilson Rumours Emerge

Rory MarsdenApr 20, 2016

Liverpool are reportedly planning to spend £35 million to sign Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson and West Ham United left-back Aaron Cresswell in the summer.

According to Charlie Wyett in the Sun, Wilson, who recently returned from a long-term injury, would cost the Reds £20 million while in-form Cresswell is valued at £15 million.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is planning a major overhaul of his squad this summer as he looks to bring his own players to Anfield to further the progress he has already engineered with the current crop.

Per Wyett, the German reportedly sees Wilson as a way of strengthening his goalscoring unit with major doubts over Christian Benteke's future at Liverpool and Danny Ings out injured.

Mario Balotelli is likely to finally be off the Reds' books next term—as discussed below by Bleacher Report's Dean Jones—meaning if Benteke also goes, injury-prone duo Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge will need further back-up up front:

However, shelling out £20 million on the 24-year-old Wilson would be a big gamble considering he is largely unproven in the Premier League.

He netted five times in six games at the start of the 2015-16 Premier League season before picking up an ACL injury against Stoke City in September, keeping him out of action until earlier in April, per WhoScored.com.

Wilson registered a 20-goal season in the Championship in 2014-15, but he is arguably not worth £20 million based only on the strength of one good season in the English second tier and a handful of decent games in the top flight.

Cresswell, on the other hand, represents less of a gamble. He has been a mainstay of the West Ham team that has exceeded expectations and challenged to secure a European place for 2016-17.

For many, he is more than deserving of a spot in the England squad, having enjoyed two fine seasons with the Hammers since his move from Ipswich Town in 2014. The Manchester Evening News' Samuel Luckhurst is a fan:

Klopp's squad is not particularly strong at left-back, with the inconsistent Alberto Moreno the first-choice option.

Cresswell would be a fine addition, both as a relatively experienced Premier League defender and a full-back with genuine quality in attack—his delivery is excellent, and he chips in with a goal or two as well, WhoScored.com showing he has notched two goals and four assists in the English top flight this season.

As noted by Wyett, West Ham could well be persuaded to let Cresswell go for £15 million as they only paid Ipswich £4 million for him.
