"It's been favorite of mine for a while," Manning said of TCU, according to Scout's Gabe Brooks. "It's been the right move for me and I've prayed about it and talked it over with my family. The staff is great, and the environment."
Manning, a 6'3" and 203-pound receiver, is considered the No. 10 wide receiver and the No. 75 player overall in the class of 2017, according to Scout.
Brooks offered the following assessment of Manning:
"Impressive downfield threat with good long speed. Dangerous red-zone weapon thanks to size and leaping ability. Consistently high-points the ball. Proven ball-winner. Good at adjusting mid-air to make plays on the ball. Go-get-it type of receiver. Can improve get-off at the snap. Not a dart-and-dodge, make-you-miss receiver. Plays for a talent-laden high school program and sees good competition in practice as well as games. Overall, a great, high-major talent with a high ceiling.
"
ESPN's scouting report (subscription required) added that Manning would be even more coveted if he had "better speed and explosion."
Manning has high aspirations for himself, however, and models himself after some of the NFL's finest receivers in recent memory.
"I look up and pattern my game after A.J. Green and Calvin Johnson," Manning told Greg Powers of Scout in May 2015. "I like that they are physical, aggressive with the ball and that they make a lot of plays."
Indeed, given his lack of quick-twitch explosion but his excellent size, Manning is the sort of receiver who will have to make plays in the air or across the middle. He should be a fantastic weapon in the red zone, and if he's allowed to get a full head of steam, he can be a vertical threat as well.
The fact that he comes from a strong program like Lancaster means that the adjustment to the next level shouldn't be terribly steep for Manning, either. While he probably won't make a major impact for TCU in his freshman season, he has big potential and could become a household name in the college game in a few seasons.
