Don Barclay Reportedly to Re-Sign with Packers: Comments, Reaction

Offensive tackle Don Barclay is reportedly on the verge of re-signing with the Green Bay Packers.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Tom Silverstein, Barclay is in Green Bay to finalize the deal and will take part in the team's offseason workouts beginning Monday.

Sports Illustrated's Aaron Nagler isn't sure retaining Barclay is the right move to bolster the offensive line:

The 26-year-old missed all of the 2014 season after tearing his ACL in practice. He looked to be a little rusty in his first year back, with Pro Football Focus giving him a 25.7 grade for 2015, which ranked 76th out of 77 qualified tackles.

PFF's Khaled Elsayed ranked the Packers offensive line seventh in the league but considered Barclay a "dud," writing: "There were some real horror-show performances from [Barclay]. Sure, he was asked to play a variety of roles, which is never easy, but his starts at tackle were really poor."

The Green Bay Press-Gazette's Ryan Wood highlighted one particularly bad showing from Barclay in the team's Week 16 loss to the Arizona Cardinals:

As long as David Bakhtiari stays healthy in 2016, re-signing Barclay makes some sense for the Packers. He can play on either side of the offensive line, though last year demonstrated he's not a reliable left tackle for long stretches. Moving him to guard might not be a bad idea, either.

Should injuries press Barclay into a starting role once again, though, Packers general manager Ted Thompson might regret not setting his sights on another target this offseason.
