RBC Heritage 2016: Saturday Leaderboard Scores and Highlights

Joe PantornoApr 16, 2016

The third day of the RBC Heritage from Harbour Town Golf Links in South Carolina is in the books, and Luke Donald holds a one-stroke lead at seven under heading into the final round.

Here is what the leaderboard looks like after Saturday's action:

Golfers usually have to deal with some natural elements, whether it's rain, wind or even animals. But on Saturday, Harbour Town provided something else to contend with, as the PGA Tour showed:

Starting the third round just one stroke back of leaders Jason Day, Charley Hoffman and Kevin Chappell, Donald put together the most consistent day with four birdies and two bogeys to take the lead.

Three of them came in his first eight holes, as his putting game was on point. With the tour average at minus-0.005 strokes gained, Donald gained 0.825 on the day.

His finest putt came on the heels of a bogey on No. 9 to get a birdie right back on No. 10, via the PGA Tour:

That birdie brought his score to eight under, but he lost a stroke with a bogey on No. 13.

Unlike Donald, Day found himself in trouble early and had a hole to dig out of after a dreadful start.

He started the day at six under, and a bogey on No. 1 and a double bogey on No. 3 quickly dropped the world's No. 1 golfer six spots down the leaderboard.

A birdie on No. 5 brought him back down to one over, but that's when the wheels fell off. On his last 10 holes, Day recorded seven bogeys and plummeted down the leaderboard. He finished the day at eight over and is now at two over for the tournament.

Chappell also saw a big drop-off in play Saturday, just not nearly as bad as Day. After starting the first eight holes at two under, Chappell recorded three bogeys and two double bogeys to end his day at four over. He's two under for the tournament overall.

Hoffman, on the other hand, is still in the discussion for a win at Harbour Town, sitting just one stroke off the lead with even par on the day.

After a front nine in which he went two under, Hoffman recorded three bogeys on his final nine holes, including two on Nos. 17 and 18.

The PGA Tour showed his birdie on No. 2:

If he had limited the damage in the homestretch, then he would have been in front heading into Sunday.

Hoffman is joined in second by Jason Kokrak, who used a solid charge of a three-under on Saturday to get to within a stroke of the lead.

Kokrak had three birdies in his first five holes before a bogey on No. 8. He kept his back nine clean though, recording just a single birdie on No. 15.

If this tournament suggests anything, it's that the golfer who can string together the most consistent day is going to have a shot at a title.

Chappell and Day had golden opportunities to distance themselves from the pack but couldn't decipher Harbour Town well enough.

Hoffman, on the other hand, did well enough to stay in contention, which could come up huge in the final day of the tournament. Given the inconsistencies of the rest of the field, if he puts together a decent round, he'll finish at the top of the heap.

Post-Round Reaction

While Donald is in the lead at this event, there was one last week that he wasn't a part of which is fueling him, via the PGA Tour:

Being in the running at the RBC Heritage is nothing new for Donald, who has been a runner up three different times, but has never won.

He spoke with the media about that after his round on Saturday, via Charlie Kane of PGATour.com.

“Probably a little dangerous to say a place owes you,” Donald said. “But certainly I've been knocking on the door many times at this event. I would love to put that tartan jacket on tomorrow.”

While history might not suggest that he will, a motivated Donald that has something to prove to the golfing world could provide the boost needed to get over the hump and win the RBC Heritage.
