Most Liverpool fans seemed to be treating the game with more reverence than English clubs typically hand to Europa League fixtures:

Many fans on Twitter seemed to suggest that if Liverpool could beat Dortmund, they would win the whole competition. One fan went a step further:

As one would expect, much was made of the pre-match rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone," which both sets of fans sang in unison:

The feelings of positivity among the Anfield faithful were dampened after less than four minutes of play when Simon Mignolet parried a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang volley into the path of Henrikh Mkhitaryan:

In the 20th minute, Adam Lallana was presented with a golden chance to pull one back, but it didn't go so well:

Despite the circumstances, many forward-thinking Reds fans remained positive:

As the game progressed, Mamadou Sakho came in for some criticism for his part in Dortmund's goals:

A few minutes after the restart, Liverpool were given renewed hope when Divock Origi found the back of the net:

However, the hopes of Reds fans were dashed once again when Marco Reus connected with a sublime Mats Hummels pass to make it 3-1 on the night:

In the 66th minute, Philippe Coutinho made sure the remainder of the game would be competitive when he made it 3-2:

A thrilling game took another turn in the 74th minute when Sakho atoned for his defensive sins with the equaliser:

The dying minutes were a stressful affair for Reds fans:

In the first minute of extra time, the unthinkable happened—Dejan Lovren headed in Liverpool's fourth of the night to make it 4-3.

The game finished 5-4 on aggregate to Liverpool, and it will surely take pride of place in the pantheon of the Reds' famous European nights:
