Most Liverpool fans seemed to be treating the game with more reverence than English clubs typically hand to Europa League fixtures:
Many fans on Twitter seemed to suggest that if Liverpool could beat Dortmund, they would win the whole competition. One fan went a step further:

As one would expect, much was made of the pre-match rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone," which both sets of fans sang in unison:
The feelings of positivity among the Anfield faithful were dampened after less than four minutes of play when Simon Mignolet parried a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang volley into the path of Henrikh Mkhitaryan:

Things got worse for the Reds within minutes when Aubameyang doubled the visitors' lead:

In the 20th minute, Adam Lallana was presented with a golden chance to pull one back, but it didn't go so well:

Despite the circumstances, many forward-thinking Reds fans remained positive:
"People complaining! Raising the white flag already! Does no one remember Instanbul! We are #lfc #YNWA

As the game progressed, Mamadou Sakho came in for some criticism for his part in Dortmund's goals:
"Just think if we had 10 men and Sakho weren't on the pitch it would be 0-0 and them goals would of been offside

A few minutes after the restart, Liverpool were given renewed hope when Divock Origi found the back of the net:

In the 66th minute, Philippe Coutinho made sure the remainder of the game would be competitive when he made it 3-2:
"You have to admit that Klopp has Liverpool playing some good looking attacking football.

"If you type "big game player" into Google, you get a compilation video of Coutinho's goals for Liverpool. True story.

A thrilling game took another turn in the 74th minute when Sakho atoned for his defensive sins with the equaliser:
