Masters 2016: Top Quotes and Takeaways from Final Round of Year's 1st Major

Joe PantornoApr 10, 2016

Danny Willett became just the second English-born golferand the first since Nick Faldo did so in 1996to win the Masters in a wild finish on the back nine Sunday.

Willett had a masterful performance and, more importantly, a clean one, as he didn't record a single bogey. With five birdies on the day, he was able to jump from even par after three rounds to a Masters-winning five under after the final 18 holes.

He spoke with the media shortly after he won, per Golf Channel:

After a birdie on No. 8, Willett was stuck at two under, five strokes behind reigning Masters champion Jordan Spieth.

But a disastrous turn to the back nine by Spieth, which included two bogeys on Nos. 10 and 11, along with a quadruple bogey on No. 12, left the door open for Willett, who took full advantage.

With birdies on Nos. 13, 14 and 16, Willett got to his final score of five under, which was enough for the win.

As he was ready to end his round with a par putt on No. 18, Willett removed his white sweater to reveal a green polo. Some thought it had some kind of special meaning, but Willett explained it, per ESPN.com's Jason Sobel:

There was a pressure-filled waiting period, though, as Spieth had four holes to play after Willett completed his round.

Spieth could manage to get within only three strokes, finishing tied for second with Lee Westwood.

Newly donned in his green jacket, Willett couldn't find many words to describe his dramatic victory, per the PGA Tour:

There was a chance that Willett could have missed the tournament entirely, as his wife was due to give birth to their son Sunday. But the baby was born at the end of March instead, and Willett was the last golfer to report to the tournament.

He spoke with the media about what became perfect timing, per Sobel:

Spieth was in the driver's seat throughout the tournament. With just nine holes to go after leading for the first 63, all Spieth had to do was stay the course, and he would have been the first golfer since Tiger Woods in 2001 and 2002 to win two straight Masters titles.

What made matters worse was that he had to deliver Willett his green jacket as part of his duties as the reigning champion.

With poise beyond his years, Spieth spoke with the media, per Lance Lahnert of the Amarillo Globe-News:

After trudging through No. 12, perhaps the most difficult hole of his life, Spieth drew strength from the fans, per Matt Ginella of Golf Channel:

Rory McIlroy, who finished the tournament tied for 10th at one over, felt for Spieth, but not too much, per Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune:

While it was a gutting loss for Spieth, it's important in times like these to take a step back and look at the big picture.

At 22 years old, Spieth is one of the best golfers in the world and hasn't finished worse than second in three appearances at the Masters. There will be plenty of opportunities to get back to the top of the leaderboard at Augusta, and the loss could fuel him to get even better after the initial shock wears off.

However, he might have one more golfer to contend with, as Willett has transformed from little-known English golfer to a household name and major winner overnight.
