Masters 2016 Leaderboard: Latest Scores and Standings from Saturday at Augusta
Moving day at the 2016 Masters is about to get a lot more intense as the tournament's top contenders, including a marquee final group of Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy, begin the third round at Augusta National Golf Club.
Spieth entered the day with a one-stroke lead over McIlroy, which set up a head-to-head battle that could become quite common at majors in the years ahead. Yet, there were also 12 other players within four shots of the top spot, leaving the door open for a surprise winner.
Let's check out how the leaderboard currently shapes up for the season's first major. That's followed by a look at the top storylines heading into the remaining portion of Day 3.

Round 3 Afternoon Preview

Spieth looked primed to run away with his second straight Masters title for about 25 minutes during Friday's second round. He'd built a two-stroke lead after Day 1, and that advantage had ballooned to five by the time he rolled in his second birdie of Round 2 on the third hole.
His score stood at eight-under par through four holes before things started to crumble. He posted a double bogey on the fifth and proceeded to play four-over golf across the final 14 holes of the round to bring a lot of players back into the mix.
Afterward, Christine Brennan of USA Today passed along comments from the defending champion, who discussed the difficult conditions and trying to put the struggles out of his mind quickly.
"I dropped a few strokes today, and I'm still in the lead, but boy, that golf course changed very much on the back nine," Spieth said. "We were trying to adjust with ever-gusting and changing winds. We'll go out tomorrow and pretend it's a new golf tournament and go out and try to beat the field."
Meanwhile, McIlroy managed to post a one-under 71. While it might not sound like much, it matched the day's best total, with only four players able to improve their overall score in Round 2. It left him just one shot behind Spieth atop the leaderboard.
Perhaps the only people more happy about that progress than the Northern Irishman were television executives. Getting maybe the game's two biggest names, at least with Tiger Woods on the sidelines, in the final group should equal ratings gold.
ESPN Stats and Info spotlighted their previous head-to-head results on the PGA Tour:
Wind figures to play a significant role once again as they take the course. AccuWeather projects sustained winds around 12 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph throughout Saturday. Based on Friday's results, that would seemingly give at least a slight edge to McIlroy.
That said, while Spieth and McIlroy will likely dominate the conversation, there are several other players capable of stepping up to steal the spotlight.
Brandt Snedeker, Sergio Garcia and Dustin Johnson are among the notable names who entered the afternoon at even par or better. Then there's world No. 1 Jason Day, who's still searching for top form, but started his round just five strokes off the pace.
Or maybe it's time for a less-heralded golfer to enjoy their big breakthrough. Danny Lee, Hideki Matsuyama and Danny Willett are a few players in the immediate chase pack who have the game necessary to emerge from the chaos with a career-defining victory.
Dave Tindall of Rotoworld noted Willett in particular is worth monitoring, given his room for improvement on the par fives:
All told, the wind will make it difficult for anybody to pull away from the pack Saturday. Add in the fact AccuWeather is forecasting more favorable conditions Sunday (only 10 mph gusts) and Round 3 could become a battle to survive before aiming to go low in the final round.
If the overall outlook remains much the same after the third round—Spieth and McIlroy at the top with a dozen or more players still within striking distance—Sunday's action would become absolute must-see TV given the amount of drama that would likely ensue.
