Some big names saw their Masters run end early, as they just couldn't find a way to navigate through the challenging course. Blustery conditions saw wind speeds blow at around 25 miles per hour, which made any shot from distance dangerous.
One of the last cuts of the day provided a big collapse as Phil Mickelson, who entered the day at even, shot a seven-over to miss the mark.
At four over through 14 holes, Mickelson double-bogeyed Nos. 15 and 16 to drop beneath the cut line at eight over.
To stay in the tournament, he had to birdie Nos. 17 and 18 and did so on the first hole, but he didn't on the last.
While the wind caused problems for most, Ernie Els had an insurmountable deficit after his disastrous first hole on Thursday in which he six-putted a quintuple bogey on No. 1. All six of those putts were within three feet, which made it all the more difficult to watch.
It was originally scored a sextuple bogey along with a seven-putt hole, but one stroke was taken off. CBC showed the replay:
He shot an eight-over on Thursday and followed it up with a one-over on Friday.
While Bubba Watson just managed to make the cut at six over, Tom Watson, who won the Masters in 1977 and 1981, missed the cut in what became his final round at the Masters. He announced in July of 2015 that this would be his last competitive go at Augusta
The 66-year-old shot a six-over on the day to finish at eight over for the tournament, but it gave the fans at Augusta an opportunity to bid him a fond farewell.
The PGA Tour tweeted this out upon his completion of his final hole:
His highlight from the two rounds might not have been a drive or a putt, but rather a tribute on the 13th hole of the first round to his former caddie of 27 years, Bruce Edwards, who passed away in 2004 after a battle with ALS.
Edwards would always eat an egg salad sandwich on hole No. 13 at the Masters, and in Watson's arrival at the hole, he left one there for his old friend, via Moleman:
Ian Woosnam, the 1991 Masters champion, announced on Friday, with far less fanfare, that this year would be his last at the tournament, according to the Associated Press, after he shot a 19-over in the two rounds.
Rickie Fowler is also going home early, which is surprising to many. One of the young, rising stars in golf, Fowler was considered by some to be in the running for the green jacket this year.
But a miserable first round in which he shot an eight-over doomed Fowler, as he finished at nine over.
For these golfers that won't be playing on Saturday and Sunday, they'll have to wait until June 16 to get a crack at another major, as that's when the U.S. Open starts up from Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.
