Masters Leaderboard 2016: Updates on Golf's Top Scorers on Friday

Mike ChiariApr 8, 2016

Following an entertaining first round that saw defending green jacket winner Jordan Spieth surge to the lead, play at the 2016 Masters continued Friday with the field looking to track down the 22-year-old superstar.

While they didn't do much to impact Spieth, windy conditions wreaked havoc on many golfers Thursday, and they were present once again for the second round at Augusta National Golf Club. That added even more unpredictability to a tournament stacked with no shortage of serious contenders.

As Friday's second round continues, here is a look at the current leaderboard for the first major event of 2016:

Expectations were high for Spieth entering the 2016 Masters after winning by four strokes and tying Tiger Woods' Masters record of 18-under par last year. The Texan certainly didn't disappoint in the first round by posting a six-under 66.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Spieth made history by entering the second round atop the leaderboard after leading from wire to wire in 2015:

Spieth also continued his impressive streak of never posting a round worse than even-par over the course of his Masters career:

As seen in this video courtesy of the PGA Tour's official Twitter account, Spieth played what was essentially a flawless round with six birdies and no bogeys to his credit:

Spieth is known for his humbleness, and although he was happy to begin the tournament in such dominant fashion, he was also quick to keep things in perspective, per the Associated Press (h/t FoxSports.com):

"

I would have signed for two-under today and not even played the rough, knowing the conditions that were coming up. Just scored extremely well, which is something I've been struggling with this season. If I can kind of straighten out things with the iron play, hopefully we'll be in business. But yeah, I'm extremely pleased with that round today. I felt like we stole a few.

"

Although most expected the likes of Jason Day and Rory McIlroy to be Spieth's top competition Thursday, it was unheralded Irishman Shane Lowry who found himself in second place, along with New Zealand's Danny Lee at four under.

As pointed out by ESPN's Mike Greenberg, Lowry was close to matching Spieth's remarkable opening round:

Masters Tournament on Twitter provided a look at Lowry's performance, which featured several impressive approaches and putts at Augusta National:

The same can be said for Lee, who surprised many by outperforming most of the big names who were supposed to be near the top of the leaderboard:

McIlroy put himself in the hunt with a first-round 70 for a total score of two-under; however, his day would have been better if not for two bogeys in his final three holes.

Even so, the four-time major champion entered the second round confident in his ability to make a run at his first green jacket, according to PA Sport (h/t ESPN.com):

"

[Spieth's] very, very comfortable here. You look at the way he played in 2014 and 2015 and look at what he's done this year; it's a golf course he's comfortable on and he's going to be tough to beat this week. I feel I'm going to have to play good golf, but I feel there's enough good golf in me so that I can reel him in over the next 54 holes.

"

The windy conditions made for a different golf course depending upon when certain golfers teed off, and that figures to be a factor in the second round and beyond, which could create some significant movement on the leaderboard.

Spieth never trailed after any round in last year's Masters, and while a similar performance isn't out of the question this time around, several golfers have already shown that they have no interest in fading away quite yet.
