Real Madrid Transfer News: Ricardo Rodriguez Interest Confirmed, Latest Rumours

Rory MarsdenApr 8, 2016

Wolfsburg left-back Ricardo Rodriguez is a target for Real Madrid, according to the player's father.

The 23-year-old Switzerland international was on target from the penalty spot for the German side as they recorded a surprising 2-0 lead in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie against Los Blancos on Wednesday.

Rodriguez's father, Jose Manuel, has since revealed the Spanish giants are interested in signing up his son and has suggested it would be a big step up, per Antonio Estevez in Marca:

The whole family is very quiet on everything that has been published in recent weeks.

It is true that Real Madrid has a small interest in Ricardo, but time will tell what will happen. We will have to wait.

It would be a major jump in his career. Playing for Real Madrid is the dream of any footballer.

The report added that Manchester United and Bayern Munich have also been linked with Rodriguez, who signed for Wolfsburg in 2012 for £7.5 million.

Since moving to the Volkswagen Arena, he has become one of their key players, making the left-back position his own.

A threat going forward and delivering the ball into the box, the former FC Zurich man is also able defensively and played his part in keeping out Real on Wednesday.

Real's first-choice left-back, Marcelo, proved just why he needs some competition at the club with a poor display.

He was caught wildly out of position in the build-up to Maximilian Arnold scoring the second goal and was involved in an embarrassing exchange with the midfielder later on in the game, shared by BT Sport Football:

AFP's Kieran Canning gave a fairly damning assessment of what he thought of Marcelo—and the rest of the Real back line—after the first half against Wolfsburg:

Rodriguez would provide manager Zinedine Zidane with a fine alternative to the Brazilian at left-back, both in case Marcelo gets injured or he fails to keep his performance levels up.

A report in January suggested Rodriguez could cost Real up to €35 million (£28.2 million), a fairly hefty sum for a defender, per Marca's Santiago Siguero.

However, given his relative youth and Real's need for depth at left-back, he could well be worth the money.
