USA vs. Colombia Women's Soccer: Time, TV Info, Live Stream for Sunday Friendly

Matt JonesApr 9, 2016

Colombia face the unenviable task of facing the United States women's national team for the second time in four days on Sunday in an international friendly.

The South American side were hammered 7-0 in the first of their double-header on Thursday, with the USWNT turning on the style with some devastating stints of attacking football. With the memories from that clash still fresh, it’s going to be intriguing see what the reaction will be from both teams when they square off again.

With United States manager Jillian Ellis set to give some other players in the squad a chance ahead of the summer Olympics, the Talen Energy Stadium crowd could be in for a treat. Those new faces in the side will be aware they’ll have to match the levels showcased on Thursday, meaning there'll be no handbrake on in this one.

Colombia Seeking to Avoid Another Hammering

EAST HARTFORD, CT- APRIL 6: Carli Lloyd #10 of the United States works toward the net as Colombia players defend in the second half during an international friendly soccer match at the Pratt & Whitney Stadium on April 6, 2016 in East Hartford, Connecticut

Getting the better of the United States at the Pratt & Whitney Stadium on Thursday was always going to be a massive challenge for Colombia. But for the early stages of the game, they defended well, keeping the hosts at arm’s length.

However, the United States showed exactly why they’re one of the most feared forces in the game at the moment, as they netted four fine goals in a blistering 12-minute spell before half-time.

The first came from the in-form Crystal Dunn, who bagged after a wonderful turn and calm finish. Andrew Das of the New York Times hailed the influence of the forward so far this year:

From there her team-mates took over. Allie Long, Mallory Pugh and Carli Lloyd added more goals in that burst. Then after the break, Tobin Heath and Long both scored in a three-minute spell before Christen Press rounded off what was a brilliant display.

It was certainly a showing that sent out a message to the watching world ahead of the summer Olympics. After all, while Colombia were without some key players on the day, they’re a team who have made steady improvements as of late and impressed plenty at the World Cup last year. That the USWNT could score seemingly at will was ominous.

The quality of the goals scored really caught the eye too. Alex Morgan, watching on from the sidelines, commented on the swagger with which the team operated:

The performances of individuals certainly doesn’t make things easy for Ellis as she continues to weigh up options for her squad this summer. And that’s what makes the second game very important.

Morgan Brian will hope to be given a chance to impress on Sunday, as will Morgan after she missed the first game. Long and Dunn replaced the duo respectively after they picked up injuries in pre-season ahead of the National Women's Soccer League and both shone; if they are replaced this weekend, then strong performances are needed.

In terms of the match itself, another dominant display is surely on the cards for the hosts. As SportsCenter illustrate here, they have been in an irresistible groove so far in 2016:

Colombia manager Felipe Taborda will have been disappointed by the way his side crumbled after a strong start and will surely give some of his other players a chance to impress after that surrender. The game plan the team adopted at the beginning of the match will likely be implemented again, although it’s imperative Las Cafeteras play with more conviction.

The United States will simply have too much for the visitors, though, especially if the predatory instincts of Morgan are at the point of the attack. A chastened Colombia side won’t be quite as brittle in Chester as they were last time out, although the end result will still be a routine win for the hosts.

Prediction: United States 4-1 Colombia
