Borussia Dortmund vs. Liverpool: Goals, Highlights from Europa League Clash

Ryan BaileyApr 7, 2016

One year ago, Jurgen Klopp announced his decision to leave Borussia Dortmund, putting an end to a chapter of his career that saw him turn a Bundesliga side with a modest budget into a European behemoth.

On Thursday evening, Klopp returned to the Westfalenstadion with Liverpool for a UEFA Europa League quarter-final tie on what was clearly an emotionally charged occasion:

After five minutes of play, Simon Mignolet was faced with pressure from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The Belgian 'keeper dealt with it with little fuss:

After 17 minutes, it was Mamadou Sakho's turn to protect the net with a goal-saving block from a Henrikh Mkhitaryan shot:

In the 36th minute, Liverpool made the breakthrough via the striker who was given a spot in the starting line-up ahead of Daniel Sturridge—Divock Origi:

Just before the whistle blew for half-time, Origi had another chance to find the net, but Roman Weidenfeller came off his line to make an excellent block:

The Dortmund 'keeper then proceeded to shout at the referee about the offside call, earning himself a booking in the process. BT Sport commentator Michael Owen believed Origi should have chipped him. Or "chicken":

Within two-and-a-half minutes of the restart, BvB found the equaliser when Mats Hummels headed home his third goal of the season:

Shortly after the equaliser, a series of chances fell to Liverpool, but they were denied by some superb goalkeeping from Weidenfeller. Here he is denying Philippe Coutinho:

Just before the hour mark, Dortmund won a free-kick on the edge of the box. Marco Reus' curled effort landed comfortably in Mignolet's arms:

A few minutes later, Hummels found Gonzalo Castro with this outrageous outside-of-the-boot pass:

With around 11 minutes of normal time remaining, Alberto Moreno put a nasty two-footed challenge on Christian Pulisic. Amazingly, the Spaniard was not shown a card:

Liverpool finished the game with 11 men and, much more importantly, a 1-1 draw that leaves them in an excellent position for the second leg. El Kloppico concludes next week.
