Champions League 2016 Results: Wednesday Quarter-Final Scores, Top-Scorers List

Tom SunderlandApr 6, 2016

A hectic night for European football saw Wolfsburg claim a surprise 2-0 lead after the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash with Real Madrid, while Manchester City drew 2-2 at Paris Saint-Germain.

The Wolves surprised Real Madrid with a blistering 2-0 triumph at the Volkswagen Arena, where Cristiano Ronaldo was prevented from extending his grip as the tournament's current top scorer.

Meanwhile, Zlatan Ibrahimovic netted his fifth goal in as many Champions League outings to move into the competition's top 10 scorers this season—albeit on the same night his penalty miss seeded great doubt in Paris.

Wolfsburg 2-0 Real Madrid

Wolfsburg fuelled the dreams of football romantics everywhere and embraced their role as underdogs in Wednesday's meeting against Real Madrid thanks to goals from Ricardo Rodriguez and Maximilian Arnold.

An early foul from Casemiro gave Rodriguez his chance to nudge the hosts in front from the spot before some fine buildup from Julian Draxler and Bruno Henrique led to Arnold's second just seven minutes later.

The Wolves were every bit worthy of their 2-0 lead at the break, and Bleacher Report U.K. envisioned what Barcelona defender Gerard Pique might have felt were he to give his opinion on the scoreline:

Real Madrid would come to outdo their hosts in terms of possession and shots accounted for—they managed 21 to Wolfsburg's 10, per WhoScored.com—but the only figures that mattered read on the scoreboard.

Try though they might, the likes of Gareth Bale and Ronaldo couldn't worm their way into the match, and Squawka Football highlighted the latter's absence in particular entering the final phases:

Wolfsburg chief Dieter Hecking was overjoyed to see his side score twice against Real, but perhaps an even greater achievement all things considered was failing to concede a goal in the home clash.

The German side now travel to Madrid next Tuesday full of hope for what might be as their breakthrough season among Europe's elite continues to take on a fairy-tale path.

Paris Saint-Germain 2-2 Manchester City

Ibrahimovic made up for his penalty miss by scoring not long after.

Manchester City salvaged a 2-2 draw in their trip to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday evening, where Ibrahimovic missed from the 12-yard spot before helping his side claim a share of the first-leg spoils.

The Paris hosts had an early opportunity to go ahead after Bacary Sagna was adjudged to have fouled David Luiz in the area, but goalkeeper Joe Hart was equal to Ibrahimovic's low penalty effort, via Match of the Day's Gary Lineker:

On the same evening that Wolfsburg pulled off the incredible, former Volkswagen Arena star Kevin De Bruyne took City's first real chance with brilliant comfort, racing clear on the end of a Fernando through ball to put the English side ahead.

But the Brazilian quickly descended from hero to villain, and BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand could look nowhere else than to place his blame at Fernando's feet for the role he played in Ibrahimovic's swift equaliser:

City held their lead for all of three minutes, and just as they went in at the break with a dent in morale, Adrien Rabiot ensured the second half began in a similar vein by putting PSG ahead for the first time.

Hart parried a close-range effort only for Rabiot to snuff up the rebound with great glee. BT Sport's Julien Laurens pointed out the poetic nature of his strike:

Thankfully for Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini, Fernandinho was on hand to divert a bobbling rebound past PSG No. 1 Kevin Trapp not long after, which proved the final contribution of the evening.

Of the two teams, the Citizens could be far happier with their draw in France and having notched two away goals, but both defences showed concerning holes in need of addressing prior to Tuesday's reverse fixture.
