Krzyzewski Doing Well Following Surgery

Sunday, April 3

In February, Krzyzewski announced he planned to have surgery on his left knee when Duke's season concluded, per USA Today's Scott Gleeson. He added at the time he intends on coaching the United States at the 2016 Olympics in August.

USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo affirmed he and Krzyzewski never entertained the idea the legendary college coach might be unavailable: "I remain 100 percent convinced that there is no better coach to lead the U.S. as it looks to successfully defend its Olympic gold medal in Rio and represent the United States in a manner all Americans will be proud of."

Colangelo has already worked out a succession plan, with San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich replacing Coach K after the Olympics, according to the Associated Press (via USA Today).

An injured knee wasn't the only health issue for Krzyzewski in 2016. He missed Duke's 80-71 win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Feb. 2, with assistant Jeff Capel assuming head coaching duties. The News & Observer's Laura Keeley reported Krzyzewski spent the night in a hospital for precautionary reasons after doctors tested his heart.

Assuming Coach K is good to go for the Olympics, his status for Duke's 2016-17 season shouldn't be in much doubt. He still has a little over five months to recover before the Blue Devils tip off the regular season.

With a number of key players potentially returning and a recruiting class that ranks second in the country, per 247Sports' composite ranking, Duke will be in a great position to rebound following this year's Sweet 16 exit in the NCAA tournament. Having a healthy Krzyzewski for the entire season will be key for the Blue Devils if they hope to reach their potential.
