NASCAR Truck Series at Martinsville 2016 Results: Winner, Standings and Reaction

Mike ChiariApr 2, 2016

Kyle Busch picked up his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory of the season Saturday at Martinsville Speedway, as he led 123 laps to take the checkered flag in the Alpha Energy Solutions 250.

Busch held off Truck Series points contenders John Hunter Nemechek and William Byron, as well as fellow Sprint Cup regular Kyle Larson, who led 79 laps en route to a fourth-place finish.

Here is a look at the top-10 finishers, with full results available at NASCAR.com:

While Busch is the second-winningest truck driver in the history of NASCAR, Saturday marked his first career win at Martinsville in any series.

Busch doesn't figure in to the Truck Series standings, but following the Alpha Energy Solutions 250, Nemechek finds himself in first place by virtue of his second-place finish. The following is a rundown of the top 10 with three races now in the books:

1John Hunter Nemechek83Leader1
2Parker Kligerman80-30
3Timothy Peters77-60
4Tyler Young67-160
5Cameron Hayley66-170
6Ryan Truex66-170
7Daniel Hemric65-180
8Brandon Brown62-210
9Spencer Gallagher62-210
10Ben Rhodes61-220

Busch and Larson controlled a large portion of the race, but the early going belonged to Ben Rhodes, who led 43 of the first 44 laps but had to settle for a 16th-place finish due to a late-race crash.

Rhodes was shuffled out of the top spot due largely to the first caution of the race on lap No. 41 when veteran Johnny Sauter wrecked his right front, as seen in this GIF via NASCAR Trucks on Twitter:

Busch assumed the lead on the 45th lap, but by lap No. 62 he was overtaken by Larson thanks to this daring move captured by Fox Sports 1:

The two biggest stars in the race traded the lead on a couple of more occasions in the following laps until Cameron Hayley led for an 11-lap stretch that culminated when the yellow flag came out on lap No. 163.

Parker Kligerman and Ben Kennedy were involved in one of the race's biggest accidents, which allowed Busch to regain the lead:

His rhythm was disrupted a bit on the ensuing restart, however, when Spencer Gallagher spun out and caused yet another caution:

Busch managed to stay out in front on the next restart, though, and even with some quality trucks pursuing him, it was a lead that he would never relinquish.

Other drivers certainly had their opportunities, especially late in the race due to a number of cautions and a pair of instances that led to the field being halted by a red flag.

The first came with 15 laps to go when Cole Custer, John Wes Townley and Christopher Bell caused a big wreck with some aggressive driving, as seen in this Fox Sports NASCAR video:

They went back to green-flag racing with six laps remaining, but that was short-lived, as Justin Haley, Rhodes and a host of others brought out another red flag:

That resulted in the need for overtime, but Busch was simply too good on the final restart of the race, as he held off the rest of the field to win his 45th career Truck Series event.

The victory gave Busch another nice payday, but it may have also helped his cause when it comes to Sunday's Sprint Cup race at Martinsville.

Busch qualified seventh, and he is in search of his first win of the year despite four top-five results in five starts.

Martinsville was one of the only tracks remaining at which Busch had never won in any of NASCAR's top three series, so one can only assume that he will carry a great deal of confidence into Sunday.

Trucks and stock cars are completely different animals, and the level of competition will be much higher in the Sprint Cup race, but Busch has momentum on his side, and that is a scary thought for his opposition.
