Sergio Ramos Receives Red Card v Barcelona: Latest Details, Reaction to Clasico

James DudkoApr 2, 2016

Sergio Ramos was sent off late on in Real Madrid's Clasico 2-1 away win over Barcelona in La Liga on Saturday. The centre-back picked up two yellow cards at the Camp Nou, but that didn't stop Los Blancos from winning the match, thanks to goals from Karim Benzema and a winning effort from Cristiano Ronaldo.

Sky Sports La Liga noted how many Clasico's Ramos has failed to complete:

Sky Sports Statto detailed how Ramos has made a habit of seeing red during his career and has had particular trouble keeping his cool against Barca:

Ironically, Barca goalscorer Gerard Pique felt Ramos' dismissal actually counted against the league leaders, per Spanish publication AS:

But Pique's manager, Luis Enrique, chose to skirt the issue after the game:

It took less than 10 minutes for Ramos to pick up his first booking. The former Sevilla star cynically disrupted an attempted Barca break.

That foul may have been a so-called "professional" one, but there was nothing calculating about the challenge that eventually earned Ramos his marching orders.

It came with seven minutes to go, a wild tackle on Barcelona No. 9 Luis Suarez. The incident was the height of recklessness from the Spain international.

If anything, Ramos was lucky to escape a swifter punishment, according to ESPN's Dermot Corrigan:

AS English was pretty blunt in summing up this moment of madness:

But fellow defender Marcelo told AS (h/t FourFourTwo) Ramos' infraction can be overlooked by his team-mates: "There is no problem with Sergio Ramos. He always gives his all for the team."

That Madrid managed to hold on without their talisman at the back, still barely excuses Ramos for such a rash act. It's a part of his game he seems destined to never shed, but he'll be thankful his team-mates secured the victory in his absence.
