Shell Houston Open 2016: Saturday Leaderboard Scores and Highlights
The third round of the Shell Houston Open on Saturday has created a logjam on top of the leaderboard as a number of golfers, topped by Jim Herman and Jamie Lovemark, are in the running for the title heading into Sunday.
Here is the updated leaderboard after Saturday's play:
Charley Hoffman saw his second-round lead disappear within three holes thanks to Lovemark's fast start.
Three straight birdies from No. 2 to No. 4 gave him a lead at 12 under thanks to his approach play that left him with some very manageable putts.
His play slowed down with a bogey on No. 5, and Hoffman was able to tie him at 11 under with a birdie on No. 6, via the PGA Tour:
Lovemark, though, opened up a two-stroke lead with a birdie on No. 10, while Hoffman bogeyed it. The wheels fell off for Hoffman shortly after when he shot a three-over on his final eight holes to drop to eight under overall.
Lovemark wasn't able to improve on his score, which allowed Herman, a player who has never won a PGA Tour event, to grab a share of the lead with a bogey-free five-under on Saturday afternoon.
If he pulls out a win on Sunday, he will earn an invitation to next week's Masters. So there is more on the line than just a Shell Houston Open title.
Henrik Stenson moved his way into the leaderboard conversation with his big third round of the day, which included seven birdies. The PGA Tour showed his last birdie of the day on No. 15:
He ended his day with a six-under and is one stroke behind the leaders at 10 under.
Russell Henley and Dustin Johnson are tied with Stenson at 10 under, but it was Henley who has been the most consistent with his second straight 68 of the tournament.
He also provided one of the shots of the day, via the PGA Tour:
A week before his attempt at defending his Masters title, Jordan Spieth put together a decent round, but it wasn't enough to get him toward the top of the leaderboard. With a two-under on Saturday, Spieth is at six under overall.
Shots like this chip out of the bunker on No. 7 were a big reason why he wasn't lower in the standings, via the PGA Tour:
Consistent play has been at a premium during this tournament, which will make such a closely packed leaderboard filled with drama heading into Sunday's final round.
With the way the course has been playing, good scores are attainable, but not one golfer has been able to build a healthy lead. The winner of this tournament might just come down to who is hot at the right time.
