Adrien Broner Reportedly Will Surrender to Authorities: Latest Details, Comments
Adrien Broner will reportedly surrender to police in Hamilton County, Ohio, but not before he fights Ashley Theophane on Friday in Washington, D.C., per Kevin Grasha of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
According to Grasha, Broner is wanted on charges of felonious assault and aggravated robbery stemming from an incident in January. Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office spokeswoman Julie Wilson said Broner's attorney, Will Welsh, confirmed his client plans to turn himself in on Monday.
On Feb. 5, Christopher Carson filed a lawsuit against Broner, which detailed the nature of the allegations, per Grasha and Sharon Coolidge of the Enquirer. Carson alleged he and Broner started betting on who was the better bowler at a local bowling alley.
Broner reportedly lost $8,000 in cash and then another $6,000 in money to be paid later. After Broner attempted to wager $6,000 more, Carson said he declined the request, which is when tensions boiled over:
"When Carson left a short time later, at about 3 a.m., Broner was waiting for him with a group of eight men, according to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit alleges Broner punched Carson, splitting his chin open, and then, gun in hand, continued to threaten Carson.
Afraid, Carson put his hands up.
Broner then punched Carson a second time, knocking him unconscious, the lawsuit says.
"
According to Carson, he regained consciousness and discovered $12,000 in cash missing. Citing court documents, TMZ Sports reported a witness saw Broner reach his hand into Carson's pockets and then flee the scene.
Ring TV's Mitch Abramson spoke to a member of the Cincinnati police who said the department has no legal recourse to prevent Broner from fighting Theophane, since the bout takes place in the nation's capital.
Broner will be looking to get his second win in a row since losing to Shawn Porter last June. Most recently, he earned a TKO victory over Khabib Allakhverdiev.
His fight with Theophane was originally supposed to be for his junior welterweight title, but he was stripped of the belt Thursday after failing to make weight, per ESPN.com's Dan Rafael. Should Broner beat Theophane, the title will remain vacant.
