Adrien Broner Loses WBA Super Lightweight Title After Failing to Make Weight
Adrien Broner has lost his WBA super lightweight championship one day before his title fight with Ashley Theophane after missing weight.
Per FightNews.com, Broner did not return to the scales Thursday after weighing 0.4 pounds over the 140-pound limit.
Broner and Theophane will duke it out in a nationally televised match on Friday night in Washington, D.C. Theophane is still eligible to win the championship if he defeats Broner in the 12-round battle.
Even with the fight looming, Broner may have his mind elsewhere. The 26-year-old has warrants out for his arrest on felony assault and aggravated robbery charges in his hometown of Cincinnati, per TMZ Sports.
Broner was doing a good job of hiding any potential nervousness about his legal issues leading up to the fight, guaranteeing a win over Theophane in an interview with ESPN.com's Dan Rafael:
"I will be puttin' on a show on Friday night and on Saturday night if he want to get up and fight again. I'm gonna keep my promise. I will stop him. I'm going to stop him. Listen, I can't predict the future. I don't know if it's gonna be the first round or second, third or fourth. I don't give a f--- if it's the eighth, I will stop you. And that's my promise. I will stop this man.
"
Friday was going to mark Broner's first WBA light welterweight title defense. He originally won the vacant belt last October, defeating Khabib Allakhverdiev by TKO in the 12th round.
With just a 4-2 record in his previous six fights, as well as all his problems outside the ring, Broner didn't need any more bad press heading into a title defense. He had two hours to cut such a small amount of weight, so apparently it doesn't matter to him.
